Cheryl B. says, "Marshal has been very inspiring and very adaptive to my wishes. He didn't keep me entrenched in music theory for months as some teachers do. Instead, I learned theory while learning to play music, which was much more enjoyable and motivating. If I wanted to play a specific song, he would locate an arrangement that was not too challenging for my skill level. Once I could play the piece, he would enhance the arrangement by adding or changing some notes and teaching me how to do that. The results have been wonderful. I have several pieces that I really enjoy playing. And that was my goal when we started-- to play the piano for my own enjoyment. FYI, I am 77 years old and look forward to my lessons with Marshal every week. Playing the piano keeps my mind sharp and my fingers nimble. I highly recommend Marshal for anyone who has the desire to learn to play the piano." Read more

I am a rising senior at the University of Colorado Boulder studying Applied Mathematics, and I completed Level 10 of the MTAC Certificate of Merit, which is the highest level of the California music curriculum, during high school. My approach focuses on meeting students where they are, whether that means working through a challenging piece, preparing for a recital or audition, or building foundational technique and music theory. As a math major, I have gained skills in breaking down a problem into clearer, more manageable steps, so I love helping younger students develop confidence at the piano and find their own reasons for enjoying music. Jennifer C. says, "I have two children - ages 7 and 9 - who took lessons with Bethany this year. We have had an excellent experience. Bethany has an outstanding capacity to gauge the ability of her students and to push them (gently!) to excel. Time and again she encouraged my children to play pieces and to take on challenges that I thought were beyond them. Time and again, she was right about their abilities. I have been delighted to watch both of my children grow so much under her instruction. Bethany creates multiple opportunities for her students to perform throughout the year. We were very impressed by how clearly she telegraphs to her students the need to take each performance seriously and to treat every audience to a polished and professional performance. Bethany is also, quite simply, wonderful with children. Our two children have different personalities and she found ways to relate to and motivate each of them. She can work with them effectively on their best days and their worst. Both of my children really like her - they find her genuinely warm and caring, and they can tell that she takes them seriously. They look forward to lessons and they work hard all week so that they will not let Bethany down. Her expectations are high, but she is also careful to nurture her students' self-esteem and to teach them how to move beyond their mistakes. There are many other wonderful things I can say about Bethany. She is very responsive to emails and text messages. She always follows up when she says she will. She is never late for a lesson and frequently spends extra time with her students at the end of the lesson. She emphasizes technique and other skills, even as she ensures that her students are genuinely enjoying the music they are encountering and mastering In short, Bethany is an all-around wonder as a piano instructor. We have had a very positive experience with Bethany and would recommend her unreservedly to anyone." Read more

Your Piano Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

I am an adult student taking piano lessons from Marshal. I have found him to be a great teacher who genuinely understands teaching at its core. He does not simply hand you a textbook and tell you to start on page one as if you are a machine awaiting programming. He instead gauged my current skill level and based off of that determined what to focus on or even to postpone an idea if it wasn't relevant/helping at that moment. If you laid out every lesson I have done with him the focus might seem scattered but I know firsthand it's exactly what I needed at the time and my skill progression has felt nothing but smooth and natural through his teachings.
