I'm offering piano lessons for all ages in NorthWest Colorado Springs! Learn to read and play music traditionally, and how to follow chord charts/lead sheets. I have been teaching for 23 years. $25 per individual half hour lesson.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I begin with a small assessment of where the student is at. For first time beginners I will start by teaching key names on the piano, note names in middle C position on the staff, and clapping out basic rhythms for counting. I use the Faber Books with some supplimental songs for fun on the side. Scales and chords as we go. For students who have already had some instruction, we find what level they are at and work on our practice techniques, trouble shooting whatever things we need to as we work together to gain more music fluency.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I studied piano performance at Boise State. I have been teaching lessons for 23 years.

How did you get started teaching?

In high school I started teaching the neighbor kids piano lessons, and I just never stopped.

What types of students have you worked with?

All ages, all abilities. I love working with people.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

Every year we have a Halloween recital, and all my students and I dress up in costumes and play music. It's my favorite recital to hold. I love holidays and dressing up.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

I would advice them not to go with a teacher who takes short cuts. Learn to count, read the notes, memorize the key names on the piano, memorize the scales and chords and which finger patterns to use. It all helps with your musical literacy and it makes it so much easier in the long run.
