About

Currently accepting new students for in-person lessons at my Ventura studio, or online lessons.

I am an enthusiastic and versatile musician and educator dedicated to the arts, holding a degree in piano performance from the University of La Verne. With over a decade of experience, I have developed a diverse teaching portfolio, which includes creating a free interdisciplinary music program for children through the Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation, designing workshops for adult amateur musicians, working with students with special needs, and helping guide students with playing related injuries.

I graduated from the University of La Verne with a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Music History, studying under Grace Zhao Baugh and conducting research with Dr. Kathleen Lamkin. For my undergraduate work, I explored the music of Frédéric Chopin, focusing on how his works were primarily performed in the intimate setting of Parisian salons. Throughout my career, I have dealt with performance anxiety, which has led me to explore various methods to help students feel more comfortable with their instruments in a performance setting. I enjoy performing in smaller gatherings and frequently organize salon-style concerts with other musicians and artists at my home.

As an educator, I love teaching students of all ages and introducing them to different kinds of music and art. In 2016 I developed the piano program for LA Kids, which provided underserved children in Los Angeles with free interdisciplinary music and art classes. My teaching philosophy centers on encouraging students to reach their highest potential while also helping them build confidence in their playing, both physically and mentally.

Currently, I work as a luthier for Linda West Cellos, perform in the Vela String Duo, and teach piano remotely for the Claremont Community School of Music, where I manage a studio of 13 students and have been teaching since 2015. Since 2017, I have been studying the cello, which continues to broaden my artistic interests. As a creative entrepreneur, I am passionate about exploring new opportunities to make meaningful contributions to the arts.

In my free time, I enjoy trying different kinds of coffee, attending concerts, and studying the cello. I am currently a cello student of Jean-Michel Fonteneau at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Some of my students have gone on to study at institutions such as, Azusa Pacific University, The Colburn School, and UCLA.

I have been teaching piano lessons remotely via Zoom for the past five years. Currently, all of my lessons are conducted online on Fridays, though I travel to Claremont, California a few times each year to teach in-person at the Claremont Community School of Music, where I remain an active faculty member.

Patrick has been a fantastic teacher for my daughter, who has been studying with him about 7 years. She is 16 now and he has been a positive , reliable mentor - consistently providing engaging lessons and structured practice homework. He sets expectations, guides her through challenging pieces and we’ve watched her grow so much as a musician. Thank you, Patrick!

DeJardin is a very patient teacher who provides a nurturing environment. Our son learned not only the techniques and theory, but also how to effectively practice his music pieces. The recitals are so wonderful to watch and made our son built confidence in performing. The teacher’s commitment in helping our son get better in piano also allowed him to discover his passion for other areas in music, and is now thriving in High School playing the piano in Jazz band and other instruments in Regiment. Thankful for DeJardin Piano for the positive impact you’ve had on our son!

Our son who is in high school now had lessons with Patrick over 5 years until Patrick moved.
When we look for a person who will teach our son, the most important thing to look for is “their personality” then “their teaching skills/methods” and “their own talents and skill”
Patrick has all of those, so we were very fortunate to have found him.
Patrick was always calm with our son even when our son could not focus well and he always brought his attention back to his lesson which I learned for myself as a mother.
Patrick was also not one of those teachers who would tell me or our son “I’m very busy” and would rush to finish and say “I have to go”.
He was open to us and easy to talk which allowed me ask questions and receive advice from him on how to support our son’s practice and some corrections.
After Patrick moved, our son tried a different teacher, but did not work out. However our son still loves music, thanks to the great experiences of playing and practicing with Patrick.

Patrick is a great teacher. He will meet the student where he is in his ability and work to help the student grow in his ability from there.

I studied piano until I entered college, then didn’t play again until I retired and pretty much started over with Patrick. Though my lessons with him have primarily been via zoom, that has actually worked out very well, I think because he seems so observant & comfortable that it almost seems like we’re in the same room. I also particularly like that in addition to working on technique, he includes learning about theory and listening to music from various periods and styles as well, making my lessons feel very well-rounded.
In the last year or so I’ve also experienced severe hand & wrist injuries as a result of having to use a cane to get around, and these injuries have seriously affected my ability to play the piano. Luckily for me, Patrick has proved to be extremely knowledgeable & helpful about learning how to deal with my injuries and make changes in the way I play so that I can continue to enjoy my studies of the piano.
So, if you’re interested in finding a piano teacher who is both instructive and inspiring, I highly recommend Patrick DeJardin.

Patrick is not only a great piano instructor, but a great person. He does a phenomenal job at facilitating growth by adapting to and recognizing students needs. Outside of just “playing the piano”, weve also had many interesting discussions on musicality, technique, and music history, lending towards a thought-provoking and interdisciplinary experience. It has been a truly amazing experience working with Patrick, and I can’t recommend him enough!
