About this pro

I know how frustrating it can be looking for a teacher who is perfect fit. Briefly, I offer lessons based on over 30 years of teaching experience. I hold 2 Bachelor’s and 2 Master’s Degrees in Music, the 2ndof each coming from the prestigious University of Music and Performing Artsin Vienna, Austria. I have studied with internationally renowned artists and professors, and am currently a professor myself: I teach Piano Performance and Music Theory at MiraCosta College. I have performed professionally in North America, Europe and Sri Lanka.

I am very results-oriented (immediate results mixed with correctlong-term development) and I design each lesson individually to help my students learn at the speed and in the way that suits them best. All ages and all levels of ability are welcome! I have references available if you like.

The teacher! I have known Laurie-Jean for over 10 years. She was my teacher for 4 years until my schedule changed and I had to find a teacher closer to my home. She is very professional. Her lessons include challenging repertoire, technique, music theory, sight reading, and ear training. I improved 100% as a pianist and under her guidance, was able to overcome my fear of public performance. I highly recommend her as a piano teacher.

We lived in California for three years and Ms. L was a great teacher. She raised the level and understanding of music. She’s challenging and insightful. She gave great rates for outstanding lessons!! Highly recommend.

Laurie-Jeanne Lister is an outstanding piano teacher for younger or older students of the piano. Her extensive training in Vienna shows in her teaching methods, which aim at getting you to play musically first and foremost. She knows how to teach at all levels. I have been studying with her for a number of years and have advanced in my playing thanks to her fine coaching. And best of all, she knows that music should be fun, and makes each lesson a pleasure for the student. I am an older adult and have studied with many teachers over the years and LJ is the best piano instructor I have ever had!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

A trusting rapport between teacher and student is essential for successful lessons. I use the first few lessons to learn as much as I can about other activities and interests the student has, so I can tailor their pieces accordingly. I endeavor to learn as much as possible about their other time commitments so we can come up with an at-home practicing schdule that is reasonable and fun.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

While North American Universities offer “doctorate degrees” in the performing arts, Europe does not. The Austrian title, Magister, represents the highest degree available in the performing arts in the European Union.
