Catherine Neitenbach Private Swim Lessons
About
I have over 6 years of experience with teaching 'learn to swim' classes. Additionally, I have over two years of coaching under my belt with both adults (master swimming) and children. I am a certified lifeguard and have a first aid/CPR&AED certification that is up to date. My goal when I teach is to help every person become more comfortable in the water and also improve their skills to make them even better swimmers or athletes.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
During our first lesson, I assess your skills in the pool and then begin to create a lesson plan that is catered to what you're looking to improve on. Depending on your experience in the pool, we could be working on anything from the basics to building endurance for triathlons.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a water safety instructor for over 6 years and additionally have over two years of coaching experience with both youth and adult (masters) swimming. I have taught lessons for parent-tot all the way up to adult swim conditioning classes. Being able to teach all age groups allows me to get a feel for how differently an individual who is 6 months old learns skills in the pool compared to an adult who is first learning to swim. They're very different and require very different processes.

How did you get started teaching?
My mom and dad got me into teaching because I was swimming on the local swim club and was already always at the pool. Since I already had a majority of the swim strokes down very well, I enjoyed helping the little kids on my club team, so my parents thought it would be a good job for me. I became a certified instructor and began teaching swim lessons after I finished my own swim practice. From there I've been able to add coaching to my roster!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students ages 6 months to over 80-years old. I have worked with children with autism and other developmental disabilities. I am patient with everyone when they're learning to swim. I believe if you're willing to pay to learn a skill, you should get as much out of it regardless of what you come to the plate with. I will be unbiased.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I am coaching a summer swim team this year, and I am very proud of them. None of the kids have any swim club experience, but they have improved greatly with their skills in the water. They are able to contend against swimmers that, at the beginning of the swim season, had more skill sets under their belts. It's really enriching to watch the kids you spent hours with in the pool win races against kids who had more experience. They get a self esteem boost and love the pool more and more every day! It's really a fulfilling job!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find the best teacher for you. Read their bios, ask them questions. Usually, the more experience they have, the better. But it doesn't necessarily mean they're the right fit for you. Everyone learns differently, and one teacher may be better at explaining something compared to one you thought was your best choice. If you're paying the money to take private swim lessons, then you should find the person that is able to help you improve.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Are they experienced in teaching someone your/ or whomever is taking the lesson's age?
What are you getting for the price they are asking. What skills do they have that will prove that you're getting your money's worth?
What do you want to improve on specifically? Is it freestyle endurance? Backstroke skillwork and technique? Etc.
