Meredith A. says, "I had a great experience working with Dr. Jaffri. Learning self-defense means putting yourself in uncomfortable situations, and Dr. Jaffri patiently teaches you how to handle those situations. He goes at your pace but also pushes you to learn new skills. I am much more aware of my surroundings now and feel confident about my ability to defend myself if the need arises. I think every woman should learn some basic self-defense, and Dr. Jaffri is a great teacher. He is also very flexible about scheduling and made it easy for me to fit lessons into busy weeks. Highly recommend. " Read more

We teach men, women, and children how to protect themselves and those they care about. I learned from Grand Master Savelli who learned from Great Grandmaster Reeders, who studied under his uncle Master l. His uncle was Master Lu Seong. He studied at the the shaolin temple in the Hunan Provenance, China. I was kidnapped when I was a teenager and have a strong passion to teach people how to stay safe. Your jiu jitsu questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do jiu-jitsu classes cost?

The average cost of jiu-jitsu classes is $50 to $200 per month, depending on the class age range, number of classes per week, your commitment or contract length, and the instructor's expertise and reputation. Jiu-jitsu gyms and academies are more expensive if they have well-known instructors who are national champions on staff.

In addition to the monthly class or gym fee, you'll have extra costs for gis and belts. A jiu-jitsu gi costs $60 to $120 on average, while belts cost $15 to $30. Some gyms also charge a fee for belt promotion. However, this is frowned upon by reputable academies and is often considered a warning sign of a low-quality gym.

What is jiu-jitsu?

Jiu-jitsu is a self-defense martial art based on grappling and ground control, focusing on the skill of taking your opponent to the ground and wrestling for a dominant position. jiu-jitsu uses the principles of leverage, pressure, grip, timing, and angles to subdue your opponent.

Jiu-Jitsu classes provide:

  • Self-defense skills
  • A fun and exciting way to improve your fitness
  • Increased focus and concentration

Where did jiu-jitsu originate?

Japanese martial arts expert Mitsuyo Maeda was the first to bring grappling and groundwork-focused jiu-do demonstrations to other countries. In 1914, Carlos Gracie became one of Maeda's first Brazilian students. Carlos and his brother Hélio Gracie, along with fellow students Luis França and Oswaldo Fadda, later went on to develop Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Is jiu-jitsu a good workout?

Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent full-body workout that improves strength, flexibility, conditioning, and endurance.

Is jiu-jitsu good for self-defense?

Jiu-jitsu is a highly effective self-defense martial art. Jiu-jitsu teaches you how to control a stronger and larger opponent, allowing smaller or weaker individuals to defend themselves and increasing their ability to escape dangerous confrontations.

Is jiu-jitsu dangerous?

Though jiu-jitsu is a contact sport, when practiced with proper technique and form it is safer than many other martial arts because it doesn't focus on striking your opponent with punches and kicks. In statewide competitions, jiu-jitsu resulted in fewer injuries than judo, Taekwondo, mixed martial arts, or traditional wrestling.

Is jiu-jitsu good for kids?

Jiu-jitsu can be extremely beneficial for kids, helping them to:

  • Build confidence and self-esteem
  • Improve discipline and focus
  • Increase strength and resilience
  • Develop respect for themselves and others
  • Foster new friendships
  • Improve coordination and body awareness

Where can I find the best jiu-jitsu classes near me?

Follow these tips to find jiu-jitsu academies and gyms near you:

  • Look for a reputable academy that focuses on jiu-jitsu rather than a mixed martial arts gym.
  • Research the instructors' competition record and reputation.
  • Read academy and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Confirm the academy offers classes for your experience level.
  • Visit the academy in person to confirm it is clean and well-maintained and the staff is professional.
  • Take advantage of their free day or week-long trial membership to ensure the school is a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the contract in writing before making any payments.

What questions should I ask jiu-jitsu academies?

When researching new jiu-jitsu academies, be sure to ask these questions:

  • Is the gym beginner friendly?
  • What kind of contracts do you offer?
  • Do you offer a free trial class?
  • What is your class schedule?
  • How many students do you have?
  • How many students are in a typical class?
  • What is the instructor's lineage and competition record?
  • What kind of uniform is required? Do you offer no-gi classes?
  • Do your students and instructors compete regularly?
  • Do you charge for belt promotions?
  • How often do you clean your mats?

Ali is such a genuine person. He does this because he actually cares. I love his teaching method. He builds on what you’ve already learned to really increase that muscle memory. Somethings are repetitive, because they need to be, but never boring. He’s no drill sergeant, but he will make you work. He instills very serious knowledge in a fun way. He’s super professional and I’ve never felt uncomfortable (which is very important when you’re working through these scenarios). I’m so grateful to be taking these classes. I’ve noticed a huge boost in my confidence just knowing that I’m equipped to handle any situation. I 1000% recommend taking Self Defense classes with Dr. Ali Jaffri!

I’ve been working with Mark for a few months now and have been seeing a lot of improvement. We have been focusing on rebuilding my strength after many months away from the gym. He approaches fitness with a holistic mindset. I appreciate his focus on correct form, technique, and attention to regaining my mobility, not just infinite reps and working to fatigue.

This is by far the best gym I have been apart of. I have never written a review of anything before but I felt like I should for this gym! First of all the price is amazing for what they offer. It's a great gym with an even better group of trainers. Very personable. Within the first week they all knew my name and one trainer went as far as to help me with a diet plan and person goals without any extra cost. They are very upbeat and positive and are really encouraging. The classes will push you to the limit but not as far as to discourage you. The trainers are very good at what they do. I really look forward to every class. And not to mention they bring mixed martial arts training into the mix if you are interested in that also. The trainers are all in incredible shape. Ali is a very talented and skilled fighter who has fought in mma professionally. Kirk is a great upbeat personal trainer who also has skills in mixed martial arts. And Jamie and Courtney are very skilled at colaberating their workouts to keep things fun and challenging. And they all really know how to keep things interesting while bringing the heat to push you so you can achieve your goals. And the other fellow members are very friendly. So if your looking to get in shape, find a diet plan and workout plan that fits you for a great price. Or if you want to learn how to defend yourself and/or fight in the cage, either way, limitless is absolutely what your looking for.

My son and I are so very blessed to have been able to join the profound fitness family, I say family because Diana truly cares about everyone that walks through her door. I love that there are small personalized classes to help me reach my fitness and health goals and also one on one personal training. I was nervous about going back to the gym because I injured my back awhile ago. Diana has a specialty in helping people with injuries and disabilities modifying workouts to your personal needs. She also has the ability to help the average everyday person with a workout suited for them to challenging the extremely competitive athlete. She also has an amazing kids program that helps kids gain confidence, respect, discipline and martial art skills! My son needed physical therapy at a young age (about 15 months old) and Diana was been able to help him and modify a program suitable for a toddler. My son is now 5 and has joined the kids program and he is just beaming with confidence and is excited for class everyday! I recommend profound fitness to anyone and everyone who is looking for help in changing their health and fitness or even looking for the next step in their fitness and athletic goals and training!
