The Singer's Studio

Deborah Liles · Denver, CO

Once upon a time…

A very young girl watched her mom put an 8 track into some kind of contraption in the car that played Janis Joplin’s latest release, circa 1970 ish. Something happened, some very magical happened, and a jazz singer was born at that very moment. No one knew, perhaps not even her, but the wheels of vocals were set into motion and her life would never be the same.

“I used to sneak out with the keys to my dads SS Chevelle, turn the ignition, and put that 8 track in. I would listen for hours, and live in the emotion she sang and made me feel. I was, maybe 5, perhaps even younger. Funny, I don’t remember the age, but I still live and breathe that moment I first heard her sound.”

She was also surrounded by sounds of Ella, Billie, Dinah, Etta, Frank, Dean...she became aware of them at her grandparent's home around age 7.

"I remember asking my mom for an Ella Fitzgerald record around that age, and she looked at me with a puzzled face. Go outside and play, spend time with Barbie...you don't need your nose stuck in the record player 24/7...No, mommy, Ella please...”

Around the age of 14, I heard Van Halen, and my life changed. I would scat to Eruption and Eddie's guitar magic. I would beat box to the mad, crazy rhythm patterns Alex threw down, learn every vocal harmony, and I literally found a new vocal world imitating Michael's bass lines, and David Lee's blues. I scat and improv daily, just to hone the chops, and if I still need a kicker, Eruption is a go to. One day, there will be a jazz/blues cover of a VH tune,,,so,,,stay tuned, peeps :)

Deborah started studying The Manhattan Transfer, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Big Band singers, Janis Joplin, and any other music she could get her hands on at a very young age. She did not know she was "studying" at that time, but she would dissect music lines and harmonies, and is still doing so to this day.

She has a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, and was one of the first students to be accepted to NYU's graduate jazz vocal program. She was voted Virginia's Platinum Vocalist in 2001, 2002 and 2003, and founded The Singer's Studio in 1998 to develop new jazz and pop vocal techniques for performances and in-studio production. Her performance schedule goes hand in hand with her teaching, anything she learns on the road she brings back to the training session. She is currently working on a new project with The Deborah Liles Group, and musicians will include Jeff Todd, jazz guitarist, Craig Howland, drums, Dave Porter, bass, and Keith Howland, bass and production (Chicago, lead guitar).

“It’s just an absolute passion and pursuit for me, I love training singers, and pushing them to find depths and dimensions they are not even aware of. It really is the journey, and it’s never ending.”

Deborah Liles
