About

My studio is a friendly and supportive environment where you can learn contemporary piano styles including pop, rock, jazz, and music theory along with composition and improvisation. I help students set and meet their musical goals through proven training techiques that yield steady progress while providing a fun and unique experience.

I've spent most of my life making music as a pianist, arranger and Emmy award winning composer. I'm passionate about sharing the joys of music performance and creation. I strive to see my students find that same passion, knowing that it can provide a lifetime of pleasure for themselves and their friends and family.

I decided to take piano lessons at 57 years old. Jerome took the time to discuss my whys and reasons. He did research and found me the perfect keyboard. The lessons have been amazing. Jerome brings something new to every lesson.
Everyone needs music in their life in some form.
I have a very hectic schedule and piano helps to balance my life as well as raise the bar to the quality of my life.
I highly recommend Jerome for piano lessons. He goes above and beyond to make your lessons personable, enjoyable and exciting.

My son is a 13 year-old that was really losing interest in his piano training. His teacher of six years suggeste Jerome Gilmer for my sons continued training. It has been a wonderful experience. My son has a renewed interest in writing his music and furthering his theoretical training. Music literacy and fluency is important to him again. Jerome reignited that spark! I am eternally grateful.

Frequently asked questions

I first like to meet with a prospective student and talk about what their goals are in studying with me. There is no charge for this initial meeting - I just want to get to know them a little and  make sure that they have a good understanding of what it will take for them to learn to play well. I make sure they have answers to any questions or concerns, and that they have a good understanding of what it will be like to work with me. My main goal is to be sure that we start out in a way that will insure their success in music.

Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Studies, Masters Degree in Music Theory & Composition

2023 Pricing is $70 per lesson four lessons per month, tuition paid in advance.
After working as a composer, studio pianist and music producer for many years I started teaching to share what I had learned with the next generation.
I work with students high school age and above who are interested in learning to play and/or create popular music, film and game music, and jazz.
Aurora Music Teachers Association, of which I’m an officer, sponsored an extremely successful recital of film and game music in 2023. Each student received a small “Oscar” and had their picture taken in front of a life size replica of the Oscar.
Check out their credentials thoroughly. I highly recommend checking the teachers referral listing at auroramusicteachersassociation.org. Meet with prospective teachers and get a feel for whether you would enjoy studying with them. The study of music is undertaken over a long period, and you should be sure you have time available for daily practice. If you have a strong desire to learn music and feel you can commit to studying over an extended period of time, the rewards will certainly justify the effort.
Learning music is not about instant gratification, like you might get from software such as GarageBand, which can make you “sound good” without actually learning anything. Am I willing to commit to studying music, perhaps for years, to get the rewards it offers and the results I hope for? Do I have time available for daily practice? What kind of music do I want to learn?
