My name is Michelle Metty, and I teach violin and viola lessons in Amherst, MA. I teach using the Suzuki method, which is a way of learning modeled after the way children learn to speak their native language. I strive to inspire passion and love of all music, foster individuality, and provide a positive, nurturing environment for creativity and learning.

I have a Master's of Music in Suzuki Violin Pedagogy and Viola Performance from Ithaca College and have official registered training through the Suzuki Association of the Americas for violin books 1 through 8, viola books 1 through 4, and several supplemental courses. The Suzuki teaching philosophy states that every child can learn an instrument given the right environment, every child is born with an innate musical ability that can be nurtured and trained, and every child should be valued and respected. Dr. Suzuki believed that if every child had the opportunity to learn an instrument, the world would be a more peaceful place. I share that belief because of what I see in my students. Children learn so many things through learning the violin. Patience, discipline, respect, commitment, etc. They make friends in group classes, connect with their parents by learning together, and create impactful relationships with their private teachers. By learning the violin with this method, children are given a voice that can speak so much more powerfully than words, and I love listening to what they have to say.

    Michelle is a great teacher! She is very reliable and friendly, and she knows so much about teaching and the Suzuki method. I really enjoyed working with her on viola, and she taught me so much about the instrument since violin is my primary instrument. I would definitely recommend working with her!

    Frequently asked questions

    Depending on their age, new students typically begin by learning rhythm patterns and how to hold a bow. They learn how lessons will work and how to practice with their parents. When they are ready, they are given a violin. The learning process is slow and steady. Music reading is introduced only after the student can play as fluently as they speak. The parents aid in at-home practice and attend lessons as observers and participants. The child and their parent work and learn together.

    I have been teaching since I was in high school. I had a few private students and assisted teachers with younger orchestras in school, weekend programs, and orchestra summer camps. I also taught a number of private students in undergrad and grad school. I taught full-time in Pennsylvania from 2018-2020 and in Omaha since 2024.
    I have worked with students between 3 years old and 60+ years old. It's never too late to start learning!
    It's never too early or too late to consider private lessons! I also encourage new families to commit to a full year of lessons to truly know if they wish to continue or not, as there is typically a significant adjustment period in the beginning.
    What kind of time commitment is possible for your student, yourself, and your family? Every teacher will have a different style. For Suzuki lessons, significant time is required to get the most out of the method. It needs to be a top priority, and it is really worth it.
