Hi! I’m Kat. I’ve been teaching partner dance styles for over 15 years, specializing in Ballroom, Latin, and Wedding dances. My dance training ranges from ballet and musical theater to Afro Cuban and International Ballroom. I firmly believe that cross-training provides a unique perspective when it comes to teaching. My passion is bringing dance to anyone and everyone, and giving my students the best experience possible. I live in Rockville, Maryland with my husband and dog, and my favorite pastimes include traveling, baking, and doing my nails....

Kate R. says, "My fiancé and I really like Victor's teaching style. We are even planning on continuing with him with another batch of lessons. We started out with me with some previous experience with ballroom dance and my fiance being a brand new spank'n new ballroom dancer. He does a nice balance of technique and fun artistic representation in a relaxed manner. I love the bits of history he throws in related to the dances we are learning which helps me to conceptualize what the dances were meant to be. We also highly appreciate that he does not sugarcoat his critiques (without being draconian) and, as my fiancé says, calling it out like it is and showing you how it's done, i.e. constructive criticism. My fiancé also states that as a new ballroom dancer and beginner student, he finds his style of instruction completely easy to follow. He definitely shows he has a lot of experience in his field and we are still learning a lot from this :)" Read more

Your Dance Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much are dance classes?

Kids group dance lessons cost $60 to $200 per month, or $40 per week on average. Private dance lessons for adults cost $50 to $85 per hour, depending on the location, dance type, number of lessons, and session length.

Wedding dance lessons cost $50 to $150 per hour or $500 to $2,500 for a package of 10 to 20 classes.

What should I wear to a dance class?

Most dance classes are casual and focus more on comfort and form than style. What you wear to a dance class depends on the dance type:

  • Ballet and jazz require form-fitting clothes so your form and posture is visible.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothes and shoes to contemporary or street classes.
  • Wear fitness or leisure clothes and tap shoes to tap dance lessons.
  • Wear casual clothes, smooth-soled shoes, or dresses to ballroom, tango, or salsa classes.

Are private dance lessons worth it?

Private dance lessons are an excellent way to gain new skills in a low-stakes environment, but they may not be for everybody. Private lessons are worth it if you:

  • Value privacy
  • Want to make progress quickly
  • Feel more comfortable one-on-one instead of in groups
  • Want direct feedback on technique
  • Need a class that conforms to your schedule

How long are dance classes?

Most dance classes last 30 to 90 minutes and meet 1 to 5 times per week, depending on the dance type and age range. Dance classes for children tend to meet more often for shorter sessions because children tend to benefit more from frequent, consistent lessons. Casual adult lessons tend to meet fewer times per week but are usually longer.

How do I choose a dance teacher?

Start by browsing our dance instructors, then:

  • Get three or more free estimates to compare.
  • Examine reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Choose an experienced, reputable instructor.
  • Get a written estimate and timetable before the first lesson.
  • Follow a payment schedule instead of making a large payment up front.

After asking questions and verifying credentials, hire the best dance teacher in your area.

What questions should I ask dance instructors?

When looking for local dance companies, consider asking the following questions:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Can you give me an estimate in writing?
  • Do you teach private lessons or group lessons only?
  • What dances do you specialize in?
  • What ages are you used to teaching?
  • Are your lessons entry-level or intermediate?

I like, no - I LOVE how Jaime can work with you at any skill level. But she doesn't stop there! She challenges you to be better (and it works!) Even with having to do virtual classes, she has been just as excellent an instructor! 6 years with her and I never regret taking her class.

Alyssa is without a doubt the finest tango Ambassador in DC. Her teaching style is thorough, forgiving, and very motivating; her patience is exceptional. I wholeheartedly recommend Alyssa as a dance instructor to any apprehensive person with the slightest interest in dancing - she’ll take care of the rest!

I take bachata and salsa classes with Helena. I came in as a beginner and have learned SO much in just a few months. She really breaks down every step so that everyone can understand. I've had the problem in the past where the teachers move too fast and don't explain the steps. I haven't had that issue with Helena. Instead I feel like I understand the steps and can go out and practice them with confidence. I definitely recommend to anyone, of any level, interested in learning to dance or improve their dance in a fun, welcoming space.

Svetlana gave clear, advance instructions both verbally and through demonstrations each step of the way. Her gentle demeanor was encouraging yet she pushed us to go further than we ourselves thought we could go. I highly recommend Svetlana as a teacher for any age.
