Hi! I’m Kat. I’ve been teaching partner dance styles for over 15 years, specializing in Ballroom, Latin, and Wedding dances. My dance training ranges from ballet and musical theater to Afro Cuban and International Ballroom. I firmly believe that cross-training provides a unique perspective when it comes to teaching. My passion is bringing dance to anyone and everyone, and giving my students the best experience possible. I live in Rockville, Maryland with my husband and dog, and my favorite pastimes include traveling, baking, and doing my nails....

We are a growing community of women who join together to support each other in our pursuit of health, happiness and higher purpose. We embrace, cultivate, and express our femininity through exploring the ancient art of BELLY DANCING. And we unite together in dancing, hoping to fill this world with the positive until there is no more room for negativity and hatred. There is absolutely nothing I don't enjoy about my work. I love to inspire women to dance their way to better selves. I love to connect and feel connected with women of all walks of live. But above all, I love the feeling of happiness and purpose we all experience in our classes...

Your Dance Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much are dance classes?

Kids group dance lessons cost $60 to $200 per month, or $40 per week on average. Private dance lessons for adults cost $50 to $85 per hour, depending on the location, dance type, number of lessons, and session length.

Wedding dance lessons cost $50 to $150 per hour or $500 to $2,500 for a package of 10 to 20 classes.

What should I wear to a dance class?

Most dance classes are casual and focus more on comfort and form than style. What you wear to a dance class depends on the dance type:

  • Ballet and jazz require form-fitting clothes so your form and posture is visible.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothes and shoes to contemporary or street classes.
  • Wear fitness or leisure clothes and tap shoes to tap dance lessons.
  • Wear casual clothes, smooth-soled shoes, or dresses to ballroom, tango, or salsa classes.

Are private dance lessons worth it?

Private dance lessons are an excellent way to gain new skills in a low-stakes environment, but they may not be for everybody. Private lessons are worth it if you:

  • Value privacy
  • Want to make progress quickly
  • Feel more comfortable one-on-one instead of in groups
  • Want direct feedback on technique
  • Need a class that conforms to your schedule

How long are dance classes?

Most dance classes last 30 to 90 minutes and meet 1 to 5 times per week, depending on the dance type and age range. Dance classes for children tend to meet more often for shorter sessions because children tend to benefit more from frequent, consistent lessons. Casual adult lessons tend to meet fewer times per week but are usually longer.

How do I choose a dance teacher?

Start by browsing our dance instructors, then:

  • Get three or more free estimates to compare.
  • Examine reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Choose an experienced, reputable instructor.
  • Get a written estimate and timetable before the first lesson.
  • Follow a payment schedule instead of making a large payment up front.

After asking questions and verifying credentials, hire the best dance teacher in your area.

What questions should I ask dance instructors?

When looking for local dance companies, consider asking the following questions:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Can you give me an estimate in writing?
  • Do you teach private lessons or group lessons only?
  • What dances do you specialize in?
  • What ages are you used to teaching?
  • Are your lessons entry-level or intermediate?

I like, no - I LOVE how Jaime can work with you at any skill level. But she doesn't stop there! She challenges you to be better (and it works!) Even with having to do virtual classes, she has been just as excellent an instructor! 6 years with her and I never regret taking her class.

I take bachata and salsa classes with Helena. I came in as a beginner and have learned SO much in just a few months. She really breaks down every step so that everyone can understand. I've had the problem in the past where the teachers move too fast and don't explain the steps. I haven't had that issue with Helena. Instead I feel like I understand the steps and can go out and practice them with confidence. I definitely recommend to anyone, of any level, interested in learning to dance or improve their dance in a fun, welcoming space.

How she is always cheerful and constantly working with my daughter to challenge her yet keep things in her ability. She takes things others take as negatives and finds way to make them positive. Change is something she doesn't shy away from. She is passionate about doing what is best for her students.
