Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I assess where they are if they are a beginner or have had prior piano lessons and design a curriculum which meets their goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
When I was 13, my teacher at the time suggested I begin teaching lessons because I would learn a lot from them too and he was right. I studied piano performance at OSU from 1975-79 and have continued teaching piano.
I have read many books on piano curriculum and keep up to date with current curriculums. No one curriculum has everything, so I must add in what is left out so the student has a full and broad understanding of music, theory, piano theory, good practicing skillsets, a constantly growing memorized repertoire, and good performance skills.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with very young beginners as young as 3 and all age groups through adults in their middle 80s. I have worked with all levels, beginners through advanced, college level prep, post college level pianists, piano teachers wanting to improve their own skillsets. In all of this have been many different variations of goals. Some want just classical, some want popular, or jazz, or composition, or inspirational, or arranging skills.
