Students and competitors wear what is called a Gi which consists of long pants, a jack style top as well as a belt which signifies the individual’s rank. The system was developed from a modified version of pre-World War II Judo including some techniques from Japanese Jujutsu and with a focus on ne-waza (gr...

I work from a home dojo with private lessons during COVID-19. I am a 35-year Judo black belt who also does BJJ. Unfortunately, I'm not able to work with everybody. Your first 1-hour lesson is free and I take on the folk that appear to be a good match for what I do. Giving folk the opportunity to still train in small pods when larger clubs are simply out of the question during the pandemic.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do karate classes cost?

Karate classes cost $100 to $150+ per month on average. Prices depend on the class size, student's age, location, and number of classes per week included in the membership plan. Classes held at community centers typically cost less than those held in professional dojos. Private karate lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour and are tailored to your needs and skill level.

In addition to the class fee, you'll have extra costs for uniforms, belts, and testing fees. A karate uniform—also called a Gi, karategi, or dogi—costs $60 to $120 on average, while belts cost $5 to $20. Some schools include a gi and belt with your first month's tuition. Testing fees vary by school, but beware of schools that charge more than $20 per test.

Where to find karate classes near me?

  • Look for a reputable dojo that focuses on karate rather than a mixed martial arts gym.
  • Research the instructors' competition record and reputation.
  • Read dojo and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Confirm the school offers classes for your experience level.
  • Visit the dojo in person to confirm it is clean and well-maintained and the staff is professional.

I love how knowledgeable Aaron is. I'm a very technical person and had a lot of questions. Aaron was very patient and answered all of them. His technique is also great and I feel as though I can defend myself better than I've ever have because of what Aaron taught me.

Working within the Wing Chun Science system, has helped me understand Martial Arts from a completely different view point. Taking it one step further, and going in depth, not just with the history of the sport. But the physics and geometry behind the movement. Creating a different dimension on how to look at Martial Arts and Kung Fu entirely. I look forward to continuing my Training and learning more about the Art and myself in the process!

I'm a petite female taking martial arts lessons for the first time. I chose Wing Chun due to the fact that it'd been invented by a woman. Prior to my first day with Sifu Moy, I'd been drawn to Wing Chun kung fu due to this (and admiration for Ip Man, Bruce Lee's Sifu) but my first lesson with Sifu Moy took it to another level as I gained a TON of knowledge within a span of two hours. Sifu Moy break steps into simple/easy concepts and used analogies that were relatable and understandable, especially for a freshie to this arena. He's taught me that Wing Chun is not about strength (how strong you are) but about chi energy and how to use energy to your advantage self defense. He's very patient, humble and insightful. Everything he teaches, he shares the purpose/logic for it. I'm happy, honored and excited to have found Sifu Moy. I l look forward to learning so much more from him.
