About this pro

When we started our studio we couldn't find a method that could help students understand the music that they play, encourage them to create or improvise. That is why we decided to use our expertise and years of experience teaching and started an extensive research on music and piano pedagogy to create our own method: the Brain-Based Piano Method, a mindful and comprehensive system to learn music and piano that uses the latest scientific findings on how we learn.

5 years later we are glad to see how our students are thriving. They love to play, perform and to create their own music and we continue growing and creating innovative teaching materials.

We invite you to join our dynamic studio. A fantastic learning journey awaits for you!

We totally enjoy teaching our students in a creative and engaging way. We love to write our own books and songs. We love to create original didactic games and activities that our students would love to play. We love to see our students making decisions, composing their own songs and pieces. They feel empowered and proud of themselves.

We really love all the aspects of our work and on every opportunity we have, we show our students our creative processes and encourage them to create too!

Our students are much more than passive interpreters, they are active performers who know what they are doing and because of that, they play easily and with joy!

You can see by yourself. Visit our website and Vimeo channel. We have almost 400 videos that show how much we and our students enjoy learning together!

I love how thorough she is with the students. The classes are interactive, educational but most of all fun. My girls, ages 4 and 5 respectively, are learning the fundamentals of a piano while at the same time learning techniques that are critical to writing their own music! Very very happy.

Miami Piano Studio is amazing g. My daughter progresses during every class each week. My daughter plays with 2 hands, and is able to know when she makes a mistake, and corrects it. The variety of activities that teach about all of the components of music.

The methodology. Every class is carefully thought of and my 5 yr old is learning to play the piano while having fun.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

From the very beginning we follow our motto:

PLAY, UNDERSTAND, CREATE!

In a typical class our students will:

PLAY: Our students develop essential musical skills such as rhythm, musical ear, memory and note reading through play, discovery and experimentation.

UNDERSTAND: We introduce children to the fundamental elements of music in terms that they can comprehend, and help them build an understanding of music from the very beginning.

CREATE: Once students understand how music works, they will start creating their own music.

At the first lesson the student will receive his/her own Brain-Based Piano method Student Initiation package.

It includes:

1. Initiation Book
2. Initiation Workbook
3. Reward Sheet with 40 Stickers
4. Video Tutorials
5. Audio Tracks
6. Daily Practice Guide
7. Monthly Practice Calendar
8. Initiation Diploma

The cost of these materials is: $49.99. This package is good to cover lessons for a period of 6 months to 18 months depending on the student's age and learning pace.

Once that students finish the Initiation level they are ready to move to Level 1 and so on.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

The Miami Piano Studio is a team of professional music educators with bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees. All our teachers are trained to teach with the Brain-Based Piano Method, a mindful and comprehensive system to learn music.

The Brain-Based Piano Method builds the musical skills along four lines: rhythmic, tonal, formal and harmonic. The songs and pieces the students learn become vehicles for discovery and experimentation. They learn how to apply these concepts to different styles of music and to create their own compositions.

Instruments we teach: piano, voice, guitar, flute and clarinet. Other skills we can teach: songwriting, composition, ear training and improvisation. We also train other teachers on how to use the Brain-Based Piano Method.

All of us have been teaching for more than 10 years. We love to teach children and adults from 2 to 99 years old!

How did you get started teaching?

We are a couple of musical inventors. We truly enjoy creating and designing educational tools and methods to help children and adults of all ages acquire essential music skills and a passion for creating and learning.

We met at Florida International University while studying music (Leidys – Music Education, Mihai – Piano & Organ Performance.) As a child in her native country of Venezuela, Leidys was a member of the country’s well-known music program “El Sistema”. Born in Romania, Mihai showed a gift for music from an early age. He began piano lessons at the age of 6 with his grandmother who was a piano teacher.

In 2012 we founded the Miami Piano Studio and started teaching music and piano. We knew by then that today's children are very resourceful and love to use their imagination and that we needed an effective music method to provide them with the tools and opportunities they needed to create. When we looked for this music method to use with our students and couldn't find it, we decided to create it ourselves.  That is how the Brain-Based Piano Method was born.

Our method integrates principles used by the great masters of the past and the leading music educators of the 20th century, Orff, Kodaly, Suzuki, Dalcroze, with the latest scientific findings on how we learn.  It was created with the needs of today’s children, parents, and teachers in mind, taking advantage of the opportunities of our times.

We keep working on improving our method to better serve students and children everywhere. We keep writing books, creating new teaching materials, recordings and making video tutorials. This summer we traveled to Switzerland to attend a music seminar on Partimento, the lost Italian teaching practice that produced the most celebrated composers of the past, such as Vivaldi, Bach and Mozart. Contemporary young artists like Alma Deutscher (a student of Partimento) demonstrate that with the right method and guidance, the art of classical composition and improvisation is alive and well.

When we started creating our method we knew that it was not going to be easy to create an entirely new approach. As we were happy to discover this summer in Switzerland, our method has a lot in common with the practice of Partimento: Our students learn solfege note names (Do-Re-Mi instead of C-D-E) which is a musical language they can use to sing, play and understand music. A great part of the learning happens at the piano, playing, singing and experimenting. To our knowledge, we have the only music method in the country that teaches solfege and Partimento to beginners.

We are happy to say that many children are now enjoying a creative and exciting musical journey using the Brain-Based Piano Method. Our students have fun learning, improvising and creating music.

What types of students have you worked with?

We have worked with all kind of students from 18 months (Mommy and Me Music Immersion) to 80 years old. We have work with children with special needs and with children and adults from beginners to advanced.

We have different programs using our own Brain-Based Piano Method:

Mommy & Me Music Immersion ( 18 months to 3 years old)

Group Music Immersion (3 to 5 years old)

Group Piano Initiation (3 to 7 years old)

Piano Initiation (3 & up)

Level 1, 2, 3 and so on.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I have many recent events I am fond of, but I will mention 2:

Just 2 days ago I taught this wonderful 6 years old girl. It was her first piano lesson. She was so, so happy with the lesson and our method! She had such a great smile and said many times how much fun she was having and how happy she was. A 45 minutes lesson became a 1 hour lesson easily and she didn't seem to want to go. In 45 minutes she was playing a song with 2 hands. It was amazing. It was very satisfying to me as a teacher an author of the Brain-Based Piano Method.

Other recent events include teachers from different part of the country to come to learn more about our method. It is very gratifying to see how happy they are to have found a mindful, comprehensive way to teach and learn music that uses theirs and their students' creativity. Traditional methods do not teach how to understand music, improvise or compose. Most of the time the theory and the practice are taught separetely. We integrate them and teach our students how to use all their potential from the very beginning. Teachers love that. I'm happy to see that more and more children will have an opportunity to learn music in a creative way.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

The method and the teacher are both important to consider. Most teachers teach in the traditional way they learned. Traditional methods have many limitations. It is sad to see a child in front of a piano learning music like if he/she were learning typewriting. Music is being taught as a mindless and mechanical activity. That is why we created our own method. We could not find an engaging and creative method, so we decided to do it ourselves. Then, along the way we have discovered that the Italians were teaching like the way we teach more than 200 years ago. This Italian school prepared the greatest musicians and composers of the 17th, 18th and 19th century. Bach, Haydn and Mozart learned this way. This methodology is called Partimento and now we are incorporating it to our method. The most famous contemporary student of partimento is Alma Deutscher, you might have seen her in 60 minutes.

Well, in a few words, if you want to discover the hidden secrets of music, music improvisation and composition come to us. We will be happy to have you. The Miami Piano Studio will welcome you.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

What is the most important aspect of your or your child's music education?

Is it the enjoyment of the listening experience? Understanding how music works?

Learning how to improvise and create music?

learning how to read and write music?

Instilling discipline and good habits?

At the Miami Piano Studio, home of the Brain-Based Piano Method we take care of all these aspects of the music learning experience and more.

Using the Brain-Based Piano Method students adopt a flexible attitude towards learning, create the habit of making connections, such the ones between music and math, and apply the critical thinking skills developed from their music study to other areas of their lives.
