About
My name is Michael Klotz. I am a dedicated viola and violin teacher. My position as Teaching Professor of viola and Chamber Music, and Artist-in-Residence at Florida International University allows me to maintain a high level of international students. I teach students from the US, South and Central America, Ireland, Mexico, Israel, and Canada. I accept only a limited number of violin and viola students for private lessons. Several of my recent high school students have been accepted to prestigious schools of music such as the The Juilliard School, Cleveland Institute of Music, Curtis Institute of Music, University of Michigan School of Music, and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Additionally I am a member of the artist faculty at the Heifetz International Music Institute and a viola coach at the New World Symphony. I have performed worldwide as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician with some of the most distinguished musicians of today's and past generations.
I am thrilled to see students improve and realize their potential and goals. I love being an integral part of that process! I also enjoy friendships with my students and their families. My students are like my children - musical children! I specialize in helping high school students achieve their college goals.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I am a stickler for the fundamentals of violin and viola playing such as posture, Rythmn, intonation, and tone production. Every student has their strengths and weaknesses and I aim to use those strengths to help them overcome those weaknesses.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold degrees in violin performance from the Eastman School of Music where I was awarded the prestigious Performer's Certificate. I also hold a double masters degree in violin and Viola from The Juilliard School. I studied with some of the most celebrated pedagogues of our time.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My rate is $125 per lesson. I don't look at the clock so I often go longer and don't charge extra.
How did you get started teaching?
My beloved mother was a violin teacher for students of all ages. Early on she instilled a love of teaching and dedication to ensure that each student will reach his potential. My students are an important part of my life and I am always helpful to them even after they are no longer studying with me.
What types of students have you worked with?
Ive been fortunate to have established a reputation for working with the most gifted students wherever I've lived. One of my former students was recently appointed Principal Viola of The Cleveland Orchestra. Another is the violist of the Dover Quartet, perhaps the most successful young string quartet in the world. Other students are making careers as performers. Most of my students who are serious have been accepted to Curtis, Juilliard, Cleveland Institute, NEC, Indiana, University of Michigan, and other top schools with scholarships.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
one of my former students just developed an app for iPhone! Very proud of him!
