Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I teach each student according to his/her goals. To facilitate this, I begin with an interview, where we share expectations, go over my policies, etc. In the first few lessons, we begin our focus on fundamentals of technique, music theory, and practice standards.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold a Master's degree in music, and have 24 years of music teaching experience.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $90/month for 4 30-min lessons; $130/month for 45-min lessons; $170/month for 60-min lessons.
How did you get started teaching?
I learned of an opening at a local music store that was growing quickly.
What types of students have you worked with?
I teach piano, voice, clarinet, and saxophone to students of all ages and ability levels. I've had many All-County and All-State students over the years, and several have received college scholarships for music.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
The summer clarinet clinic at Stetson University. One of my students landed principal chair, out of 90+! The celebration concert was tremendous!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
To learn anything takes diligence, time, and patience. Learning to sing properly or play a musical instrument can be a very rewarding and fun endeavor, but it requires all of the above. This is my career, so I know what I'm doing, and I thoroughly enjoy teaching music! Look for a teacher who loves playing and teaching music.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1. The teacher's studio policies; make sure you can meet each other's expectations for attendance, practice, etc.
2. Can this teacher take me where I want to go with music?
