My daughter is 7 years old, and has been taking lessons with Ms. Crawford for about 6 months now. She had 2 years of piano lessons with 2 other teachers previous to Ms. Crawford. She was not progressing and was never excited about her lessons. Since Ms. Crawford has been giving her lessons, she has been one happy girl! She loves to practice, looks forward to every lesson, and is progressing beautifully! We are so very thankful that we found a teacher that is so great at what she does! Thanks to Ms. Crawford, our daughter is blossoming.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Our first lesson will include a comfortable, fun, and relaxed short conversation with the student/parent(s). The objective here is to learn about the student's musical interests, passion, and goals. That will be followed by a short evaluation of the student's understanding of music(piano, voice, flute, and/or music), and the student's first lesson. For the student who is new at playing the piano, voice lessons/singing, flute, or at music, we start with the basic essentials. The objective here is to secure a strong foundation and a simple way to get started. For the student who has had lessons previously, the student plays or sings a piece of his/her choice, so that I can observe and pinpoint the student's understanding and knowledge of music, and how the student approaches playing piano, singing, flute, or all three. This allows me the opportunity to make recommendations and specially tailor lessons to each individual student. The first lesson will follow.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Besides having earned my degree... I find great importance in keeping myself well informed in music (updated). I attend various yearly meetings/conventions, and take new relevant musical courses to learn about the latest developments in my field.

How did you get started teaching?

I grew up in a very musical family and was introduced to music at the age of 3. I grow up involved with music and learning music, and I understand what it is like to start learning to play piano at any age, from early childhood to adulthood. My mother was a renowned classical concert pianist, and my father, a symphonic orchestra maestro and Opera vocal. My parents introduced me to the world of piano/voice/flute/music at a very early age. I started taking piano/voice/flute/music lessons at the age of 3. I gradually progressed and played at my first recital just before I turned 4. Then, at age 7, I started to play at concert halls. I continued my studies in piano, flute music, vocal/singing lessons, and soon became very successful in my musical career. Today, my mother is a highly distinguished former classical concert pianist and music professor, my father is a highly sought after former orchestra and chorus conductor, and I am a very successful professional pianist, instructor, and educator. My professional experience and knowledge, the fact that I had amazing parents and grew up in the company of renowned musicians, and the fact that I had lessons with sought-after, knowledgeable, responsible, and caring piano/flute/vocal/music instructors throughout my life, have allowed me to learn how important, valuable, and enriching music is in each person's life. All those things inspired me to follow this beautiful, gratifying, and exciting career!

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with: Beginner, intermediate, and advanced students Students whose goals were to become professional singers, pianists, and flutists. Students looking to have private piano, flute, voice, and/or music lessons at home, or at my professional music studio as part of their curriculum. Students interested in simply learning music theory. Students whose goal was to prepare for piano auditions and talent shows. Students whose goal was to become professional musicians. Students who were looking to learn to to play and/or sing for their own enjoyment. Beginner students who wanted to be introduced to the wonderful world of music. I use an innovated traditional method and material. The lesson material is easy to understand and promotes fast progress and learning. Advanced and intermediate students whose goals were to improve/perfect technique, and music reading and performance capabilities. I strive to help my students maximize their highest musical potential and inspire them to love music and truly enjoy playing piano, flute, and singing!

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I recently prepared one more student to audition at Bak Middle School of The Arts. I am proud to say that she was also accepted. To this date, I have taught and prepared over 30 students to audition to Bak Middle School of The Arts, over 40 students to audition to Dreyfoos School of the Arts, and 4 students to audition to The Juilliard School. They were all selected.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

It would be essential to look for an experienced instructor, who is truly dedicated towards helping students reach their highest musical potential, and who understands the importance of specifically formulating lessons to each individual student, with the student's musical needs and goals in mind. That instructor should also be able to identify what material should be given for practice that would absolutely aid in the student's fast progress, always keeping in mind to make the learning material interesting. The potential student should not only look for an instructor who is experienced, but also, who offers one-on-one private lessons. Private one-on-one lessons, will require the instructor's attention to be 100% directed to one particular student - The student will have the undivided attention of a qualified and experienced instructor, which will absolutely aid in the student's steady progress.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

When ready to look for an instructor, costumers should identify what their musical goal is, and how committed they are towards taking lessons and reaching their goal. That is not only important information to the costumer, but also very valuable information to the new instructor. Next, costumers should think of a few questions that should be directed towards the instructor, for example, total years of teaching experience, how important the student's musical goal is to the instructor, and if lessons are one-on-one, private lessons. Costumer's should always keep in mind that private lessons that are given in person, are not only easier for the student to understand, but also direct the instructor's full attention towards one student, and allow the teacher to successfully correct posture, hand position, etc. Finally, make sure to ask about the instructor's lesson rates.
