After teaching music in public and private schools, we decided to offer private lessons in our home for group or solo performance. We offer many musical instruments and styles, and encourage our students to explore several different skills and accomplishments. We are a 501c3 music school, with family rates, and reasonable fees. What is your typical process for working with a new student?
At your first visit, we can explore several different instrument families, and see which ones you are more comfortable with. We help you find the right size guitar, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, violin, cello, accordion, harp, autoharp, keyboard, piano or digital piano.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a professional performer since I was 6 years old. I have a Batchelor of Arts degree in Music, and a Master of Arts in performance. I believe in continuing education, and encourage adult students to enjoy learning something so satisfying! I continue to learn new instruments myself, and practice what i preach. I am currently playing the harp and keyboard in the Celebration Orchestra at First Baptist Church of Woodstock.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
We have family discounts for those who want to play more than one instrument, or more than 1 person taking lessons.
Private Lessons $90 a month for 30 minutes (always get a fifth one free - 4 times a year)
Multiples or Small Group Lessons $75 a month for 30 minutes each.
How did you get started teaching?
When I was in high school in Los Angeles, I attended the Sherwood School of Music. My teacher asked me if I would condsider teacher his young daughter. I was thrilled, and new something very special had been added to my life. She was trusting me to teach her everything I knew!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have enjoyed teaching everyone with a personal touch. Being "gifted" myself, I can encourage other students that need special challenges. On the other hand, my studies with brain development have opend up the world of special needs, and I have taught blind students, children missing limbs or fingers, those that have autism, and arthritis.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
We plan a group recital or performance 3 or 4 times a year. Each one has a theme, and this spring it's "Back to Bach and the Classics". The students will perform in the Orchestra Room and sit in the orchestra seats at church. We will also have a digital harpsichord and pipe organ with the harp and guitar ensembles, and many piano duets and trios. Saturday, April 29th, at 4:00 at First Baptist Church of Woodstock.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I encourage Everyone to pick up an instrument and play! If one doesn't help you feel good about making music, let's try another....and you don't even have to buy or rent one to try it!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Music seems to be an inimate relationship with your teaching. I am teaching you to listen and learn, and I really care about your needsl. Some of us have allergies, or exhaustion, and we can always work with your schedule. I LIVE here!
