I am not a teacher to whom music came "easy". There were many struggles, therefore, I work constantly to analyze what each student needs to accomplish individual goals. My experience encompasses a number of years and includes working for music store studios, Community Schools of Music and private lessons in my own studio. I am an active participant in Des Moines Music Teachers, Iowa Music Teachers and the National Association of Music. In addition to 7 years of study as a young student, I completed 18 years as an adult student. Numerous workshops over the years have allowed me to meet many teachers and composers and to learn from them. My students may choose to participate in group lessons, recitals, festivals, master classes and competitions. I have studied at Iowa State University and Drake University. Theory, pedagogy, analysis, scales and chord study are important parts of the curriculum. Each of these areas are incorporated into every piece that a student studies. By the time students enter their third year, they have the tools needed to play proficiently. Most of my students study completely through high school and adults often continue for 6 to 10 years. Attendance of concerts or other musical venues is required. My studio includes a concert grand piano, a digital Roland and 2 Yamaha keyboards so that we can play ensemble music. I have accessible off street parking on a quiet street.
Celebrating the joy of music in all its diversity with students and others who share this love is exciting. Life is a journey and music is a very important part of that. Celebrating who my students are as individuals, helping them discover insights about themselves and observing the development of confidence, determination and discipline is rewarding to me as a teacher. Interaction with others, measuring learning skills and watching a personality emerge over a longer period of time while working in a one on one relationship validates what I do as a teacher. I have been known to cry when I hear a student perform music with absolute beauty. The recent explosion of information about the effect of music study, especially piano, on the brain at any age validates what I have believed for a long time. I enjoy being around anyone learning new things because I am a perpetual student. Working with students keeps me constantly engaged in life. Music is ageless and lasts thorugh the many ages of a student's life.
