Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
It may differ depending on the student's age or interests. Usually, when my student is a beginner, we start with technical exercises to gain independence and fingers precision. We also start our first approach in music reading with easy scores to start the experience of making music as soon as possible.
My teaching method revolves around 3 fundamental axes: Technique, sight-reading, and repertoire. All synthesized in the same lesson.
I also enjoy talking with my students to know their motivations in music. It helps me a lot to envision what might work best in each case, because each student is a very different universe!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Graduated from the Pontifical Xaverian University (Colombia), 'alma mater' where I was awarded as Bachelor in Music; I successfully completed music studies with emphasis on classical piano performance, composition, conducting, vocal technique and Pedagogy. The last is added to the knowledge I obtained much earlier on plucked strings (Classical Guitar and Cuatro llanero).
My education allowes to be teacher in: Piano performance, sheet reading, score engraving, ear training and music history. Being part of chamber music ensembles, choral ensembles, developing study programs according to the level of any student. Conducting choral, orchestral and initiation ensemble implementing Orff methodology. I'm also a piano recital performer, singing soloist and music producer on digital notation and production software as Finale, Sibelius and Logic Pro, Ableton Live, among others.
As piano student I was trained by international masters such as Marjorie Tanaka (Japan), Helvia Mendoza (Colombia), Sergei Sichkov (Russia), and Radostina Petkova (Bulgaria). Throughout my career, I made deep studies and research on in theory and style studies of Western academic music, ranging from the Renaissance period, through the Baroque, classicism and romanticism to the twentieth century, including Colombian folk music.

How did you get started teaching?
I've always had an attraction to explaining things to people. Officially, when I was finishing my Bachelor's degree at the university, I received a job offer as a piano teacher for students from other careers such as computer science, accountants and lawyers, among others. That was how the adventure began.
What types of students have you worked with?
Through 9 years of experience I have had the opportunity to work with students of all ages. Seniors between 60 and 75 years old with a fervent desire to learn to play the piano. And of course school-age children, this is the most frequent segment. Young adults either, in college or active in their career and whose desire is develop a hobby.
