Ken K. says, "The morning for me started at when I left my apartment at %am to be at Joe’s house at 6. I picked him up 10 minutes early, he got in the car and we proceeded to go to a County Forest Preserve for my training as we discussed over the phone. There had been a gentle snow the night before and there was a light coating of snow on the trees, grass, and ground to the park. It was beautiful. At this park is a toboggan run with 120 stairs to reach the top of the hill. We (I) walked up these stairs and made martial arts blocks and punches as I walked up and down the stairs of the hill. It was my preference to work outside. I didn’t want to learn in a gym stinking of sweat. His approach to teaching was my favorite part. The funniest part is t he only way for your muscles to no longer be sore the next day is to do the exercises. I found that to be a total gas. I went for over two hours, he said I can go all day if I want. It would still be $25. I walked those stairs and did other exercises for two hours. I had to stop walking down the stairs because of the jello factor of my legs. After learning these exercises from him I can do them anywhere. It’s great. I will admit there was about ten minutes I felt I was being ripped off and that all he did was show me a toboggan run by his house, then I did what I learned after I got home. What seemed so slow (the bunching and blocks) looked lightning fast. People said they didn’t know I was so quick and neither did I. I would dump my gym pass if I didn’t play basketball or swim sometimes on Sunday. Next time I go we work on legs. I thought WTF were the stairs for?" Read more

Your Jiu Jitsu questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do jiu-jitsu classes cost?

The average cost of jiu-jitsu classes is $50 to $200 per month, depending on the class age range, number of classes per week, your commitment or contract length, and the instructor's expertise and reputation. Jiu-jitsu gyms and academies are more expensive if they have well-known instructors who are national champions on staff.

In addition to the monthly class or gym fee, you'll have extra costs for gis and belts. A jiu-jitsu gi costs $60 to $120 on average, while belts cost $15 to $30. Some gyms also charge a fee for belt promotion. However, this is frowned upon by reputable academies and is often considered a warning sign of a low-quality gym.

What is jiu-jitsu?

Jiu-jitsu is a self-defense martial art based on grappling and ground control, focusing on the skill of taking your opponent to the ground and wrestling for a dominant position. jiu-jitsu uses the principles of leverage, pressure, grip, timing, and angles to subdue your opponent.

Jiu-Jitsu classes provide:

Where did jiu-jitsu originate?

Japanese martial arts expert Mitsuyo Maeda was the first to bring grappling and groundwork-focused jiu-do demonstrations to other countries. Is jiu-jitsu good for self-defense?

Is jiu-jitsu dangerous?

Though jiu-jitsu is a contact sport, when practiced with proper technique and form it is safer than many other martial arts because it doesn't focus on striking your opponent with punches and kicks. • Research the instructors' competition record and reputation.
  • Read academy and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Confirm the academy offers classes for your experience level.
  • Visit the academy in person to confirm it is clean and well-maintained and the staff is professional.
  • Take advantage of their free day or week-long trial membership to ensure the school is a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the contract in writing before making any payments.
