About
Alexis' first goal as a piano teacher is to help you reach your own personal goals. Is your goal to be able to sight read music? Is it to be able to play one song in particular? Do you want to be able to accompany yourself as you sing? Whatever it is, Alexis creates lesson plans designated specifically for you!
Alexis has been studying piano for 15 years and has done a variety of classical, contemporary and jazz work. She has an Associate's Degree in Professional Music from the School for Music Vocations in Creston, Iowa where she has studied classical piano, jazz piano, classical voice, jazz voice, jazz arranging, classical music theory, aural skills, guitar and bass. Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
No matter what their age, the first question I ask is"what are your piano goals?" The next question I ask is, "have you played piano before?"
In most cases, students have never played before. I introduce them to proper piano technique, basic music theory and beginners sheet music. Over the course of the first few lessons, I determine how a student learns best, and what best captures their interest. Some students of mine just want to learn song after song for pure enjoyment, while others want to sing, play, and perform. Others are fascinated by the theory of music itself and we'll spend a large portion of the lesson studying that.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been taking private piano lessons since the age of 8. I studied piano extensively at The School for Music Vocations in Creston, Iowa then finished my Bachelors Degree in Vocal Performance at Columbia College Chicago.
How did you get started teaching?
One of my own teachers suggested that I start teaching private lessons. Then, another teacher of mine passed along some students to me and everything just fell into place. Before I knew it, teaching became my primary form of work as a musician.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with beginners and intermediate level piano students ranging from 4 years old to 78 years old.
