About
A dedicated teacher with over 24 years experience, I offer lessons to students of all ages in Classical, Jazz, Bluegrass, and Rock styles using a combination of the Suzuki method as well as my own unique brand of education. My main teaching goals are to help students develop a solid technical foundation while fostering a love of music in all its forms.
I have taught in North Carolina at Suzuki School of the Arts and Northview Middle School, private lessons in South Korea, and in Chicago at Hyde Park Suzuki Institute. I currently teach private lessons in Hyde Park, Galewood, River Forest, and online via Skype.
I love teaching students of all ages! The violin is one of the most difficult instruments to play, and even more difficult without good instruction. I emphasize proper technique, especially in the beginning stages of a students learning, and I love to help students acheive their goals. There is nothing more satisfying than guiding a student to a breakthrough, whether it is with a challenging technical issue or a complex passage of music!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I believe students learn best by ear when just beginning to play the violin, as learning the proper hold for the instrument and bow can be hampered by learning to read notes at the same time. That being said I also feel that learning to read music is very important and should be started as soon as possible after the age of 7.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have taken Suzuki book 1 and 2 training with Ed Kreitman and Rudy Hazuka. I also studied classical violin performance at Roosevelt University and Appalachian State University.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I run 12 week semesters and charge the following rates for 12 lessons:
30 minute lessons: $500
45 minute lessons: $720
60 minute lessons: $900
I also offer the first lesson free.
How did you get started teaching?
I moved to North Carolina in 2000 and began teaching at the Suzuki School of the Arts in Hickory. The first year I had 32 students, so it was a great learning experience for me! I taught private lessons as well as group lessons, and also was Assistant Orchestra Director at Northview Middle School.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of all ages, from 2.5 years up to adults. I believe that with enough patience and persistance anyone can learn to play the violin, and I tailor my approach to each students individual needs and desires.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
