I have been playing jazz piano for 40 years, and I love to share what I know with people interested in what is the most wonderful and abstract art on the planet. I teach adults and teenagers with no experience, and tailor what I teach to what the student wants to know.
I do an assessment of where the student is skill-wise, and regardless of where this might be, it's always my goal to have them thrilled with what they sound like after the first lesson.
I will teach as much theory as they want to learn, which of course is a basis for continuted improvement, but if the student wants to learn the "tricks" and "shortcjuts", I'm happy to show them those as well.
I love teaching, and with most students my ultimate goal is to have them excited about what they do. I don't expect all my students to become professional jazz players, but I know that they will be happy and pleased themselvles with what they play.
Of course, I make suggestions, but I focus on what the student wants, and unlike most teachers, not on what the teacher wants.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I do a complete assesement of the studdents knowledge and skill level, and most carefully ASK THE STUDENT what it is they want to accomplish. If they are new to jazz piano, I'm happy to show them different things we can work on.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've played piano for many years, and have taken jazz lessons over the years with some of the best teachers in the Chicago area. Not only did I learn jazz piano, but I understand how to teach, in part, because of the exellence of my teachers.
