Samuel Thompson Violin Studio
About
After years of teaching, I still find excitement in introducing students to concepts and seeing them understand them. Violin study with me will include basic technical concepts (based on the student's level), fundamentals of music literacy, and an introduction to the world of violin playing through discussions about artists performing on the world's stages.
I offer both in-person and remote teaching options, with remote (via Google Meet/ZOOM) being best for students who already possess some experience.
I enjoy focusing on building technical facility, practice tips, and the mutual growth experienced by both teacher and student.
Over my years of teaching at every level from beginning students to adult amateurs and conservatory students, I continuously assess student needs based on their levels and what i can offer.
Teaching positions have included:
Four Strings Academy (Boston, MA) Summer Intensive
DC Youth Orchestra Program
Guest masterclasses at the University of Arkansas and the International Mozarteum in Havana, Cuba

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first lesson is considered a "trial" lesson, during which I watch and listen to the student to gain knowledge of the student's playing level. This lesson also includes a discussion with the student (and parent/guardian, if applicable) that includes a plan for the student's development over a three-month period.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Master of Music, Rice University
Instructor of Violin to Non-Majors, Rice University
High Strings Techniques Teaching Assistant, Oklahoma State University
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My pricing system is as follows:
$30 - thirty minute lesson
$45 - forty-five minute lesson
$60 - sixty minute lesson
Families are required to pay for lessons in monthly installments:
$120 - four weeks of thirty-minute lessons
$180 - four weeks of forty-five minute lessons
$240 - four weeks of sixty-minute lessons
Monthly installments are also based on the calendar year, including school, public, and religious calendars.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching through the University of South Carolina String Project in 1987. From that time, I have taught in many capacities and on many levels, and continue to find inspiration and joy in the sharing of information.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with both child and adult beginners, intermediate middle and high school students, conservatory students and graduates, and adult amateurs. My approach includes making sure that students at every level receive all of the instruction and information that they need to progress.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Questions that students and parents should ask:
1. Will lessons be in-person or remote (Google Meet/ZOOM)?
2. Where/how do I find an instrument?
3. What performance opportunities will I have as a student?
