Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We start with a Meet-and-Greet to chat about potential goals and learning needs. Then we typically dive into lessons if it's a good fit!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Specializing in motivation and independence.
University of Michigan BA in Music, Interlochen Arts Academy -- Piano Major, and Royal Conservatory of Music -- Specialist Certificate.
How did you get started teaching?
Becoming a music teacher had been a dream for me since I was young, and I'm very fortunate my strengths and values align with a career in teaching piano!
What types of students have you worked with?
I especially enjoy working with students who wish for a boost in motivation or independence.
For advanced students, that starts with finding great music at the right level, and filling in gaps to make for smooth sailing. Whether you specialize in a genre or aim for more well-rounded, all curriculum and practice recommendations are custom-tailored to you.
For intermediates and tweens, I bring fun, enriching activities to suit their individual strengths while boosting well-rounded progress along the way. These students especially enjoy our duets, events, and special projects.
For young beginners (age 3-7), learning is "hidden" within fun activities at the piano and off-bench. Yes, gold standard curriculum can be fun! Parents enjoy hearing their child make beautiful music and seeing them learn life skills through music.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Two of my students in elementary school performed solos at a talent show.
We had prepared with fun games for performance skills, and it was a good thing we did! A light went out, and some keys didn't work, but they kept playing! These two young musicians finished their pieces, and each took a bow with huge smiles.
I'm so glad they had a positive experience. They overcame obstacles like seasoned professionals!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Meet with the teacher and ask questions! You may want to consider specializations, services provided in addition to lessons, and policies.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What do you hope to do with piano after lessons are completed?
