Lessons By Betsy D.
About
I have always had a passion for music. In middle school I took both choir classes and band classes for flute which I continued through high school and college. For singing, I've performed in large ensembles, chamber choirs, and an a capella group which I led for a semester; and for flute I performed in concert band, orchestra, marching band, and pep band playing the piccolo. I have been singing as long as I can remember and took three years of lessons; I have also been playing flute for 12 years, and piccolo for 6 years. I also know intermediate piano and am happy to teach beginner players.
I began college at Western Michigan University as a vocal performance major and am confident in my abilities to teach music theory and/or give beginner lessons for flute, piccolo, and piano, and beginner/intermediate lessons for voice.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with new students I determine where the goal is. At what level do they wish or need to be and by what date? I then assess where my student is at by doing basic warm ups that continue to get more difficult until I have a good understanding of where they are at. This informatin gives me an idea of how much needs to be covered each lesson. I come up with a few ways to teach new information to the student and work with them until I find something they can relate to or understand well. Finally, once I believe the student has good understanding of a new concept, I will ask them to explain it to me because I have found that one of the best ways to learn is to teach.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I was section leader of my choirs in high school and in college I was the Vice President or Musical Director of our a cappella group for a semester and section leader the remeainder of the year.
