Peter's degrees are in Classical piano music, and he gives his own regular solo recitals. His students perform in an annual student recital as well as other event for school and church. Peter likes to impart a very clear understanding of piano technique to all his students, and he himself has performed such pieces as the Schumann Toccata, Chopin and Liszt Etudes, and Islamey. He is able to teach piano technique to a very young age through college levels.
Peter also regularly performs for special events in jazz, pop, boogie-woogie and blues styles. He is excited about teaching these styles to students who are interested in them. Peter loves to teach improvisation, and has a very structured approach to do this, which includes ear training and theory. He also trains students in sight-singing (solfeggio) if so desired. Because of Peter's extensive performing experience as a church music director, he is the perfect choice for people wanting vocal coaching in order to sing and play at the same time ! His many years of performing liturgical music also qualifies Peter to teach organ and basic conducting skills as well.
I've been singing in choruses for many years, but I always wanted to learn how to play the piano. When I retired, I was then able to spend considerable time trying to plunk out tunes on my piano, and I made some slow progress. Then, a few years ago, when I began taking lessons from Peter, my rate of progress immediately accelerated. With Peter guiding me, I have steadily improved my piano playing skills, and my interest in and my love of playing the piano have continually grown. Using the music knowledge and jazz piano techniques learned from Peter, I've especially enjoyed improvising and being able to play and sound good playing so many of the old standard pop tunes in my fake books. What a great teacher Peter has been!
"I have been a student of Peter's for over 10 years. He is a wonderful teacher; patient, kind and knowledgeable. As a working adult, I was concerned about how much time I would have to practice and dedicate to my piano lessons. Peter is always understanding of my sometimes hectic schedule! I never feel guilty or stressed out about it and am able to enjoy playing for pleasure. I have learned new skills, gained confidence, and have achieved greater technical proficiency thanks to Peter's excellent teaching skills!"
