We teach current crime prevention and awareness strategies to increase the likelihood of avoiding a violent encounter. The techniques are designed to be effective without strength, fitness, or youth. Most self defense programs and martial arts programs mostly utilize pain as a tool to end the encounter. Let me ask you; what do you do when an attacker, due to intoxication or mental illness, can't feel pain? The answer is Citizen Defense Training. Our programs utilize the principles of balance displacement and leverage and we attack how the body functions to be effective with minimal effort. Our goal is for you to escape from a dangerous situa...

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do karate classes cost?

Karate classes cost $100 to $150+ per month on average. Prices depend on the class size, student's age, location, and number of classes per week included in the membership plan. Classes held at community centers typically cost less than those held in professional dojos. Private karate lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour and are tailored to your needs and skill level.

In addition to the class fee, you'll have extra costs for uniforms, belts, and testing fees. A karate uniform—also called a Gi, karategi, or dogi—costs $60 to $120 on average, while belts cost $5 to $20. Some schools include a gi and belt with your first month's tuition. Testing fees vary by school, but beware of schools that charge more than $20 per test.

  • Research the instructors' competition record and reputation.
  • Read dojo and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Confirm the school offers classes for your experience level.
  • Visit the dojo in person to confirm it is clean and well-maintained and the staff is professional.
  • Take advantage of their free trial class to ensure the school is a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the membership contract in writing before making any payments.

What questions should I ask karate schools before joining?

I am a Teacher's Assistant working with Autistic students and I love to study Martial Arts when I'm not working in school. I find Gehrik Mohr to be one of the best instructors I've had in a while. He understands what is important in Martial Arts and is able to adapt to the students level to work from where they are at. He pays attention to details making sure students learn the fundamentals first before working toward harder stuff as to avoid injury and ensure the students are learning properly. There is also a large focus on self discipline and etiquette which is both very powerful for people to learn, particularly children, but also something I have seen skipped in other systems. The classes can also be fun at times, with us training in the park or being given interesting challenges for the day. I have been to several schools and styles of Martial Arts and I have found no better place to train in the area than at Kuk Sool Won Madison Heights under Gehrik Mohr. I would suggest his classes to anyone interested in Martial Arts or Fitness in general. I also highly suggest this for any parents who want their child to learn self control, etiquette, and a plethora of other skills useful in school and at home.
