What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When students first start karate they spend the first couple of weeks learning the basic etiquette of the dojo like bowing, tieing your belt and basic movements like punching, blocking and kicking. Also a lot of exercise.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Anthony Sorrentino is the Michigan representative for the Genbu-Kai organization. He is a 4th degree black belt in Shito-Ryu karate and a 3rd degree black belt in Okinawa weapons. Started studying and has been a member of the Genbu-Kai since 1991.
How did you get started teaching?
1991 I started studying Karate. I had such wonderful teachers it inspired me to follow in their footsteps and give to others what they gave me.
What types of students have you worked with?
All types: children as young as 3. Adults as old as 70s.
Special needs children and adults.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My jr. students bravery and incredible sportsmanship that they showed in their last tournaments.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Call them talk to them. Visit their school and see if it is something you like before signing up. See if they offer a free trial class.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
The commitment they are willing to make.
