About this pro

I have 20+ years of teaching experience and 40 years of performing experience.  I'm comfortable teaching all levels and age ranges with training in the Suzuki method with a Master equivalent from the University of Minnesota and a BM in Violin performance from Oberlin College Conservatory and a MM in Violin performance from Rice University.  I have performed with world reknown musicians like Yo-Yo Ma, Michael Tilson Thomas, Itzhak Perlman, and world reknown ensembles like the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, New World Symphony and San Antonio Symphony.

My Philosophy is take the student where they are and make them better.  It's an individualized approach to how the student learns best, along with various resources both in repertoire and technology to create the best learning environment for the student.

I enjoy the process of learning and to see a student's face light up after they have mastered a certain skill, successful performance, entrance into a higher level ensemble or the acknowledgement that they are improving.  Talent isn't in born, it's created with hard work, discipline and a superior learning environment.

Steven has taught our daughter violin for 5 years. Not only is he highly skilled with the instrument, he is a wonderful person. He is patient and kind, he has a lovely way of interacting with her, and although his musical expectations are high, he also accepts that other life events can cause unavoidable clashes. He has worked with us to do lessons by Skype or FaceTime when weather or timing does not allow us to get there in person. I can't recommend him highly enough!!

I'm am amazed with how well Steven works and connects with his students. He is a truly gifted musician and instructor. Our son started violin this year with no prior experience on any instrument. Within a few weeks Steven had him playing well and understanding the fundamentals. Our son enjoys Steven's instruction and is motivated to improve due to his positive encouragement.

Steven is a gifted instructor who meets the kids on their learning journey through encouragement and patience. He has an incredible ability to introduce kids to the instrument and help them see their potential. He is a pleasure to work with.

Mr Leung is amazing at working with kids. My daughter enjoys learning Viola from him. He is very patient with students and encourages them to be the best they can be. He is thoroughly professional in his commitment to his students. We have enjoyed having him teach our daughter for the last 3 years.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I have an initial intake lesson where I can evaluate the students needs, strengths and weaknesses and the appropriate repertoire, etudes, skills that each student needs.  We then set out goals to work on both short and long term goals to set out to accomplish.  It helps for each student to have a notebook and also SD card in case they want to record their lessons which they can do weekly.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have both a BM and MM in violin performance and a master equivalent in Suzuki Pedagogy.  I have 20+ years of teaching as well as 40 years of performing.  I have taught at MacPhail Center for Music and currently the Orchestra Director at Benilde-St. Margaret's School in St. Louis Park, MN.  I have taught in my private music studio which is an LLC for 20 years.
