About

Hi there! I can teach anyone to play the violin or viola well. Really! If you're willing to practice consistently and follow directions, read on.

I have been teaching since I was 14 years old and have learned that a supportive, encouraging environment rooted in kindness fosters success.

My doctorate is in performance and pedagogy (how to teach), which means I specialize in setting up a beginner and then taking them as far as they want to go. My professional experience ranges from the symphony orchestra to backing up pop singers in Las Vegas to playing in the ballet theatre pit orchestra. And I have experience fiddling (including Celtic, Irish, and bluegrass), too!

I've taught violinists and violists from ages 3 through 78 and have learned so much from each one I've had the privilege to know. All are welcome here!

I'd love to hear from you with your questions, goals, hopes, or anything you'd like to share. Thank you and best violin and viola wishes! 🎶🎻

Jackie is an extremely positive teacher who has helped me tremendously with fiddling techniques, ear training, auditions, and classical and chamber music pieces. I am an adult student trying to learn fiddle pieces by ear while also building a foundation with Suzuki and other classical technique books. I love the supportive learning environment Jackie creates and the way she customizes our lessons to help me achieve my goals.

I learned more in 30 minutes than I had in a few months from previous study. Jackie is very encouraging and clearly loves teaching and expanding students abilities. Would definitely recommend her as an instructor.

I discovered the joy of music through Dr. Schmidt’s classes! I’ve attended Dr. Schmidt’s violin classes both as a child’s practice partner and independently as an adult. She’s incredibly gifted in working with children – they learn to play the violin through games and exercises that make practice both fun and challenging. Her Suzuki-style lessons hone skills beyond violin and I’ve witnessed the positive impact her teaching has had on a child’s ability to focus, embrace the discipline of practice, and build good habits around organization. I was so inspired by her approach that I decided to enroll myself into her classes! Jacqueline Schmidt is one of the highest caliber teachers across any subject I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with and I highly recommend her.

    Frequently asked questions

We begin with an interview lesson. This is a chance for us to make sure that working and learning styles are a good fit, as well as understand your goals, aims and wishes for study.

Typically, we'll introduce basic playing posture and technique for beginners. For students with experience, I will assess your playing and help you advance to the next stage in technique and repetoire, as well as identify which areas we need to bring up to speed (tone, bow control, intonation, etc).

If it's a good match, we devise an action plan to meet your goals and take it from there!

My doctorate is in Performance with a supporting area of String Pedagogy. I also am a registered Suzuki teacher and have substantial performing experience acquired throughout my career.
