I'm an old hand at teaching violin now and know what works and what doesn't. Of course it takes a bit to ascertain where the students talents are, and try to try to approach a variety of issues with an encouraging attitude.
I like seeing a student perform something I've taught them, but really I just enjoy imparting my knowledge on the subject of music and violin/fiddle playing. I know all the pieces that are "winners" but am good at creating a good technique as well as an interesting repertoire. I use a combination of materials including Suzuki School and customized songs that fit the students abilities without frustrating them.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We start where you are, use what you have, and do what we can.
We'll establish a direction to take, initiate a piece to develop, establish an achievable goal to keep the inertia going and keep things compelling but not daunting.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I started as a young boy, studied with Minneapolis Symphony Violinist and other professional players, and made my first debut in the 5th grade.
Since then,I've been on a mission: To become as good and as versatile and as original as I can be, playing with orchestras, jazz groups, Irish groups, opera orchestra, Rock stars (Prince), recording sessions, composing, Italian, Mariachi, Bluegrass, Country, Chinese and Avante Garde scenarios, to name a few. I studied at Indiana University and University of Minnesota.Hopkins school district through High School.

How did you get started teaching?
I started in High School at a local music store in Hopkins, Minnesota.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with many people young and old, from 5 years old to 85+ years old.The violin is so versatile that I've developed a broad repertoire to share with as many students as I can.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Performed my original symphonic composition "Violin Story: World's Fair Exposition" with the 3M Symphony orchestra.
Developing new sounds for the violin and writing pieces to showcase them.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Don't be intimidated by my resume: I love to teach and impart knowledge as a happy warrior, no matter where you are on your journey.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
A solid technique is attainable if you develop a good muscle memory for it. Think about what kinds of music appeal to you, but don't worry if you draw a blank: I can inspire you. The possibilities are beyond many people's comprehension, as the violin is like a human voice: endlessly variable.
