About
Hello! I am a violin and piano teacher and a whole-person coach in Robbinsdale, MN. I love to use music to help students learn a new skill and also discover wonderful abilities in themselves as they grow through a gentle, scaffolded learning process. I strongly believe in the great value of a systematic and thorough way of learning, which establishes a wide and solid foundation for the many more advanced performance skills to be built upon.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
In the begining stages of learning the violin we become aquainted with how to hold the violin and bow and proper body posture that supports confidence and playing with ease. Once the student is able to comfortably maintain these we move on to a series of simple exercises and songs that helps the student grow in familiarity with how it feels to play their instrument, primarily using open strings. As those become easy we move into a series of books that scaffold the four main areas of musical skill - note reading, rhythm reading, violin hand skill and bowing.
During the first three weeks of lessons we meet for two lessons a week. This supports the student in learning the correct posture from the beginning with less need to course correct later. We are able to move through the initial beginner steps more quickly (most people catch on to these very quickly) and are able to ride the student's curiosity and the novelty of the experience into playing the instrument sooner. I have found this system to help my students in creating a solid beginning to their musical experience, helps to create momentum in learning and also assists them in physically adapting to playing with frequency.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have done an extensive amount of personal growth and study in supporting students in the emotional challenges that learning a new skill can bring. Music is an amazing tool to help anyone learn how to self-regulate, break down large, overwhelming tasks into manageable steps, process and safely share their feelings through what they are playing, recognize when they are able to take on a challenge and when they need a gentler approach, building frustration resilience, how to work with your brain and body for optimal learning, and the deep satisfaction and joy that come from mastering a skill that initially felt daunting. I am able to help support students through the personal learning process that these growth areas involve so that they are able to acheive their fullest musical and personal potential while receiving an excellent musical education.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I use a tuition based pricing system charged monthly, by the semester or can be paid in full at the begining of the school year. My studio runs on a September - May calender with unique and customizable lesson offerings in the summer.
How did you get started teaching?
I first started teaching when I was 16 years old! I was connected to young people and adults who wanted to learn the piano or violin through my public performaces. I have learned much over the past 20ish years since and am able to offer a thorough musical education due to the variety of musical opportunities I have had and the personal growth I have experienced in life.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with a wide variety of students from young children through adulthood! My teaching system adapts to a variety of learning styles, speeds and abilities - both physical and cognative. I adapt to each student's needs for thier best experience and success.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
For those looking for a teacher I would be sure that your goals in learning match what that teacher offers. The best fit will be a teacher who is interested in hearing what you desire for your musical experience and is able to fully and joyfully support you in pursuing it.
