About

Degrees / Training / Special Info: State of Missouri Department of Education Certificate in Applied Music Overview: I am an experienced classically trained Pianist who has been playing since the 3rd grade. I enjoy all styles of music and love sharing that enjoyment with my students. I have certification from the State of Missouri that I am proficient in educating beginning Piano students and have continued to expand my knowledge through my participation with local musicians’ groups. I am also working on expanding my instrumental abilities through perfecting my percussion skills and learning guitar. I have taught students for over 30 years and have seen many changes in both student’s preferences and the style of Music and instruments preferred. I am comfortable with both traditional pianos and organs and modern electronic keyboards. I have given lessons in my home, my students’ home and retail studios.

I use Piano Adventures as the basic course guide. I have found it the most productive and enjoyable for my students. I us a minimum of the Lesson and Theory book. I add the other books that accompany each level based on the particular students needs and interests. I believe that a good grounding in Theory is essential as a student who becomes proficient in sight reading, no matter how well he/she plays by ear, will find that the doors for lifetime musical fulfillment with be much wider. However, with a student who has already had some lessons I will be happy to continue with any method that the student is currently using.

I also believe that Piano Lessons should be fun. Since I generally teach one on one, lessons can be tailored to each student and I add supplementary material to the Piano course as soon as possible based on the student’s progress and interests. I am willing to add supplementary music in most any genre from current radio hits, to Pop Standards and soundtracks, as well as Holiday Music based on the student’s culture. There is no proper pace as long as the student is willing to practice and is interested in learning. I am always surprised and happy when a student “gets” the language of music and really starts to express himself/herself through the instrument and I always find that my students teach me as much as I teach them.

I so enjoy sharing my love of music with my students and the interactions with them teach me even more. I often find that I learn just as much from my students as I hope they are learning from me.

Music is my passion and I can think of nothing I would rather be doing than working in the world of music.

She knows how to teach and I know to trust her in when I can move on and when I need to work on something a bit more.

Kathy has been wonderful with my son. She is very professional and very friendly. She finds interesting ways to relate piano lessons to a 10 year old. She is also very patient and kind.

Frequently asked questions

With my young students,If they have had no experience I work with Piano Adventures. I use the basic method or the Accelerated series dependig on thier age and maturity level. I find that this book provides the best grounding for both Theory and quick performance ability.

For Adult students I work with Adult Piano Adventures.

Of course, if a student has experience I begin with whatever materials they previously have worked with and customize their experience going forward.

I took lessons myself for over 7 years and have a Certification in Applied Music from the State of MO.

My rates are $15 for a half hour lesson in my home and $20 if I travel to the student's home.

I earned my teaching certificate in High School and started teaching while I was in College. I have been teaching ever since.

I work with all levels of students. I specialize in beginners.

However, I have picked up intermediate students in order to help them continue to learn.

I work with all ages. from about 6 years old to Adults.

The Winter Holiday Concert that I had  with my students last December was a great success. . I enjoy picking the music out with them to play and giving them a chance to show case their skills. Also the concert that we did in October 2017 also went well and my students very much enjoyed the larger venue, the Recital Hall at Steinway Piano gallery.

I myself have been very happy when I work with my local SciFi/Fantasy music group as well as spending time with Gypsy Boots Trio in Soulard.

Feel free to ask many questions and don't be afraid to begin and try out the teacher. Not all teachers and students mesh, but you won't know if you don't try.

Ask the teacher about how they can meet your goals and be sure you check out the policies on cancellations and Make up lessons.
