Hello all my name is Markei and I am a recent graduate of North Carolina Central University. I have been singing for most of my life, but it wasn't until I got to college that I got my classical training. During my tenure there I was a section leader, a conductor assistant, and I had the opportunity to compete in multiple competitions. I am a technically sound instructor that enjoys seeing the growth and development of his students. Aside from still preforming, I still want to help aid musicians young and wise to get to their desired level of musicianship. I love seeing that expression on a student's face when they think they can't do someth...

I have many years of successful teaching experience with students of all ages and skill levels. I love listening to students at the end of a teaching period (a year) and hearing that they have improved since the beginning of the teaching period. They have worked hard and i have helped them improve!

J. S. says, "I signed up my hesitant 7-year old son for piano lessons. He had already participated in more than a few sports and I wanted to make sure he was exposed to diverse enrichment activities. We chose Juliana simply because of proximity. And I'm glad we did. My son is stubborn and did not want to take lessons. However, Juliana was warm and engaging right from the start. Her studio was in her house and was very inviting and comfortable. Juliana spoke to my son in a very calm and supportive manner and encouraged him every step of the way. The first lesson was tough, he really didn't want to do anything, but Juliana sat down right next to him and showed him how fun piano could be by playing a few goofy tunes. My son slowly warmed and towards the end of the hour, he was fully engaged. Each week got better, my son became more engaged, and his progress was measurable. Juliana's demeanor and encouragement kept my son engaged and motivated. We took lessons almost every week for two years before Juliana moved. My son is now 12 and still plays the piano. We have found other teachers who are good but Juliana was still the best. " Read more

Your Singing Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much are singing lessons?

Singing lessons cost $50 to $90 per hour on average. Prices vary depending on the teacher's location, experience, reputation, and whether you're taking a private or group lesson. Group lessons typically cost less per person than private lessons, but you may not get as much personal attention and feedback in a group setting.

  • Some singing teachers charge a flat rate for a specified increment of time, typically in 30-minute, 45-minute, or 60-minute increments.
  • Many coaches offer package deals to purchase 2 to 10+ lessons at a time and reduce the cost per lesson.

Do singing lessons work?

Singing lessons won't change your sound completely, but they can help improve your sound by strengthening your vocal cords and improving your range and tone.

What do singing lessons teach you?

Singing lessons involve more than just your voice. A vocal coach will teach you how to hold and improve your posture, which gives your diaphragm optimal room to expand. You also learn proper breathing techniques and how to use your breath to improve your tone. Singing lessons also help you improve your diction—the way you articulate your words when singing—as well as your ability to match specific pitches.

Can adults take singing lessons?

Yes, adults can absolutely take singing lessons. While starting singing lessons at a young age gives you more time to develop your voice, it's never too late to begin learning and improve your singing voice.

How do I find the best singing lessons near me?

Follow these guidelines to help you choose the best singing lessons near you:

  • Check out their reviews on Lessons.com and Google.
  • Get at least three estimates from teachers with similar credentials.
  • Ask for recommendations from others in the local music community.
  • Do a trial meeting or lesson if possible with several teachers to find the best fit for your goals.
  • Ask them about their training and credentials.
  • Ask about what specific methods and techniques they teach.
  • Ask about the specific progress they've made with other students.
  • Make sure their schedule matches your availability.

What questions should I ask when choosing a singing teacher?

Ask these questions to help you choose the best singing teacher for you:

  • How long have you been teaching singing?
  • Can you share any success stories?
  • Do I need to have a good voice already to become a better singer?
  • How long does it typically take to see improvement?
  • Do you offer any package deals?
  • What is your teaching schedule?
  • How long are your singing lessons?
  • How often should I practice?
  • Do you offer private or group lessons?
  • Where do you teach?
  • Do you offer online lessons using video calling?

For the past year Nora Burgard has been my voice teacher. Our task was to help me develop my alto voice, since I sang as a tenor for many years. Nora was organized in her presentation of voice exercises which developed my range and she was thorough in her explanation of what was happening with my voice. Nora was patient with my learning and was always encouraging. I highly recommend Nora as a voice teacher and an accomplished vocalist.

Kim is an excellent teacher, and I can't believe how far she's extended my range over the last year. She has an excellent understanding of the voice works, is quite personable, has a great sense of humor, and she easily adapts her explanations if a concept isn't understood. I guarantee you'll enjoy working with her!
