Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Every student is a priority to me so I take my time getting to know each student starting with the name. I also like to know why a student has come to me. Once I have an understanding of a students desired results from training with me I can better develop thier training plan. This gets even more detailed if we are doing private lessons. All new and existing students review the basics it every class. The basics are the foundational principles of our martial way and are the pillars of are trainings success. Each class is taught in progressive phases with each phase building on top of the previous and ending with a review. Each class is hands on and interactive with related questions welcomed during training. Topics of training can include: knife use, knife throwing, knife defense, empty hand defense, using improvised weapons, multiple attacker defense, and much much more. The Core Focus for ALL training sessions is calming of the mind and body through breathing, economical movement, and good posture.

What types of students have you worked with?
I've trained different types of people from different walks of life from all over the world. I've helped people that wanted to feel safe when out late and night alone. I've trained people who were only concerned with self care. I've had students with learning challenges. I've trained men, women, and children from ages 3yrs - 93yrs since 2010. Martial arts were originally intended to be a lifestyle, not a hobby or a sport, and that is the way I teach it.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
If you're truly interested in training but are not sure of the instructor, ask for a free trial class and attend to get a feel for the teaching style and level of skill. I wouldn't rely on belt ranks or trophies to determine your instructor unless you are only interested in learning a competition style of martial art. Ask questions of the instructor that you feel are important to you. I would ask something that tells me if the instructor has actually had to use their training and to what end?
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Ask yourself why you're interested in this sort of training.
Are you planning on hurting someone?
Has someone offended you recently that you're seeking vengeance on?
Training in a proficient combat martial art system will help you, but it may also bring you problems. However, if you can answer "No" to these 2 questions, and your answer is closer related to this; "I just want to be able to protect myself and my loved ones efficiently and live my life abundantly free of stress and worry". Training with me is perfect for you!
