Depending on the age,  young students I usually teach by the Suzuki Piano method which focuses first on learning to play by ear from daily listening to CD of simple pieces and ear training instruction and games higher or lowerby the teacher. Reading music comes a little later, just as we learn to speak by hearing and imitation before we learn to read books.  Focus is initially teaching good technique and posture from watching and listening to me play.  Then when reading is added they already have good habits and can play with good touch and tone.

With transfer students who can already read music, I hear and watch them play and discuss with them how I would help them develop from there and where I would place them in a classical repertoire.  I also consider  what are their preferences and I'm open to other genres,  except I don't teach jazz.  If they also want to learn to play by ear, we can do that in addition.  I also teach improvisation, traditional and contemporary worship music, some movie themes, etc. I take adult women of any age or level.  I have much experience teaching, advanced students and can prepare them for a college audition if that is their desire.

I charge by the month, the same monthly fee year round.  I divide the 48 lessons/year and divided those into equal monthly payments.  I don't teach 4 weeks out of the year followly the school holiday and there is no charge for those 4.  Makeup lessons are offered for illness, etc. and I'm very accomodating with students' schedules.  I offer free observation of part of another student's lessons before or after your lesson.  Also, we have bimonthly Group Lesson/Performance class with a small group.  These group sessions are very motivating and enjoyable for all.  Students are encouraged to compliment each other on their performances in a relaxed atmosphere, no competition, but rather a feeling that they are all in this together, learning the same basics no matter what level their piece is.  We have refreshments and social time afterward and they get to know each other and look forward to the next time.  Friendships have developed within the group.  Performing and memorizing music is encouraged but not required.  Once a year we have a more formal recital for all students in a larger facility where they can invite friends and family.

I would advise a student to ask if they can observe some lessons with that teacher's permission so they can get to know the teacher a bit and hear how the students play.  I offer a free informational session for students and parents in my home studio to meet me and hear the various methods I teach, and let me know what goals the student may have and type of music.  I like to hear a transfer student play something to get an idea where they are and how I would teach them from there.  I also play for you.
