About

For almost twenty years, I've been performing and teaching students from different walks of life with a wide diversity of passion projects, skill levels, and musical interests. It's my firm belief that we all have music inside of us and lessons should be a vehicle to empower each student to play or sing as a confident musician in the fullest sense of the word! For that reason, each lesson is tailored to the students individual goals and interests. We use theory, improvisation, reading, and repertoire to establish solid fundamentals but approach them in a way that connects them to the ultimate goal. No rote teaching style here! My work as a musician has largely been in R&B, jazz, and funk but I've also worked as a professional classical accompaniest and a staff singer in a "classical" choir. I'm excited to still be making music - and now I can celebrate some of my students moving on to their own professional or semi-pro musical experiences as way!

Seeing students take artistic risks and feel safe enough to "make mistakes" is an unusual joy in my work. This practice not only makes us all better musicians (Miles Davis has a great quote about that!) but it primes our brain and heart for courageous living as well.

Each student has a story and I love hearing it and experiencing it through the music they choose and the way they learn. These are undoubtedly the moments that keep me teaching!

    Frequently asked questions

First lessons are always free! I feel that it's important for there to be good repoirte between students and teachers so our first lesson is about getting to know each other, trying some things out on the keyboard or the voice, and giving me a chance to understand each students goals.

Once we settle in on lessons, we work together to establish some songs to use as examples of whatever musical idea we'll be working on. Students are more inclinced to practice when a technique or skill moves them closer to playing the music they enjoy!
