What is your typical process for working with a new student?

An interview lesson is usually the first step. We spend 30 minutes having an introductory lesson. This may include hearing the student play or sing something they have learned previously, or trying their new instrument for the first time. We review my expectations as a teacher and I ask what their expectations are as the student. If we feel we are a good fit, then a regular weekly lesson time is established.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Laura received her Bachelor of Music degree in Flute and Vocal Performance from DePauw University, Greencastle IN

Laura earned her Master of Music Degree in Flute and Vocal Performance with an emphasis in conducting from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

As of January 2017, tuition for lessons at the Laura Petry Music Studio is $100 per month for weekly 30 minute lessons.

Weekly One Hour lessons are $200 per month.

A few 45 minute lessons are also available..

How did you get started teaching?

Laura started teaching fourth grade Flute students when she was 16 years old. She found great joy in helping young students discover their musical gifts, and has taught ever since.

What types of students have you worked with?

All ages and levels of students are welcome in the Petry studio! Beginners at age six, through adults, age seventy six are currently enrolled. Students can be new beginners, intermediate continuing study or preparing for a Performance career.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

This fall students participated in the annual Federation of Music Clubs event. Everyone had so much fun testing their musical knowledge through games and challenges. It was great to see students gain confidence as they mastered skills.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Always meet once to see if you feel comfortable and to find out if the teacher's goals are in line with yours.  Know why you want to take lessons, and be open and share your "why" with the teacher. Taking a musical journey together with the right teacher will enrich your life forever!
