About
Hello! I have been playing viola (my primary instrument) and violin for the past 10 years. Though I am an undergraduate neuroscience student, music remains an important part of my life. I participate in my college's symphony orchestra and play in several chamber ensembles.
Over my years of playing viola, I have personally experienced the transformative power of studying an instrument (even while balancing it with a busy schedule!). I have learned that a person’s playing is almost always a reflection of how they are feeling at the moment, and therefore can be used as a strategy to enhance self-understanding and compassion. I have learned that ultimately, the most fruitful playing is that which was really difficult at first.
With these lessons in mind, my goal as a teacher is to guide and inspire my students to develop a deep connection with their instrument, using it as a means to improve their mindfulness in regards to their emotions and embrace difficulty when it is in service of something beautiful and worthwhile. As such, I aim to instill discipline and perseverance in my students through approachable goals and simple yet effective practice strategies, integrating techniques from my neuroscience background, such as interleaved practice, mental rehearsal, and error-based learning. I hope to empower students as we reach goals together and they see that what was once thought impossible has become totally attainable.
