I would advise seeking a teacher who emphaisezes good physical and energetic alignment and who speaks to the "soft'' approach of relaxing, sticking and listening.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
A new Tai Chi student should be prepared to practice on their own in between classes and understand that Tai Chi is an Art form that we learn gradually and that turns upside down some of our most cherished habits and 'instincts' essentially training us to rewire the nervuos system out of a fight or flight resonse.
