Your karate questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

Karate classes cost $100 to $150+ per month on average. Prices depend on the class size, student's age, location, and number of classes per week included in the membership plan. Classes held at community centers typically cost less than those held in professional dojos. Private karate lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour and are tailored to your needs and skill level.

In addition to the class fee, you'll have extra costs for uniforms, belts, and testing fees. A karate uniform—also called a Gi, karategi, or dogi—costs $60 to $120 on average, while belts cost $5 to $20. Some schools include a gi and belt with your first month's tuition. Testing fees vary by school, but beware of schools that charge more than $20 per test.

Karate classes provide a variety of benefits for both children and adults:

  • Increases confidence and self-discipline
  • Improves strength, endurance, and flexibility
  • Teaches goal-setting and perseverance
  • Improves focus and concentration
  • Better balance and coordination
  • Improves cardio health and stamina
  • Improves social skills and teamwork
  • Teaches self-defense skills

Kids' karate classes are typically 30 to 60 minutes long, depending on the kids' age. Adult karate classes range from 1 to 2 hours in length.

Yes, karate has weight classes categorized by age and gender. The World Karate Federation (WKF) recognizes five weight classes in competition, while the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognizes three weight classes:

  • Men – up to 67 kg
  • Men – 67.1 kg to 75 kg
  • Men – over 75 kg
  • Women – up to 55 kg
  • Women – 55.1 kg to 61 kg
  • Women – over 61 kg

Follow these tips to find the best karate schools near you:

  • Look for a reputable dojo that focuses on karate rather than a mixed martial arts gym.
  • Research the instructors' competition record and reputation.
  • Read dojo and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Confirm the school offers classes for your experience level.
  • Visit the dojo in person to confirm it is clean and well-maintained and the staff is professional.
  • Take advantage of their free trial class to ensure the school is a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the membership contract in writing before making any payments.

Ask these questions to ensure you join the best karate dojo for you:

  • How much do your classes cost?
  • Do you offer a free trial class?
  • What is your class schedule?
  • How many students do you have?
  • How many students are in a typical class?
  • What should I wear to class?
  • How often should I practice outside of class?
  • Do your students and instructors compete regularly?
  • Do you charge for belt promotions? If so, how much?
  • How often do you clean your mats?

I appreciate Sifu Andre for his knowledge, positive energy, and passion for teaching. He genuinely wants to help you learn. That being said, I would never ever ever want to be the bad guy who gets into a confrontation with him… Andre is what you might call “resourceful.” I’ve done JKD / Kali classes and training sessions with Andre. For me, it’s a fun way to work on coordination / reaction time and build memory. Although I came in with zero martial arts background, Andre has given me a basic understanding of movements and possibilities should I ever need to react. Overall, Andre’s classes are a blast, and they’ll fly by like a moment in time. 🙂

I’ve been taking wing Chun with Sifu Marc for more than a year now and he is a great teacher! He makes sure you understand why the technique works and explains the philosophy and physicality behind it. So he’s not just teaching you moves, he’s actually explaining how it works. Also, he makes sure you’re doing the techniques before moving on to the next lesson, which will assure that you’re doing it the right way and not wasting your time throwing random punches. Best martial arts teacher I’ve ever had.

Braich Sensei of the Three Rivers Dojo has trained me for the last 12 years. Discipline, integrity, honor, and legitimate technique in kenjutsu, aikijujutsu, and karate is what comes to mind. With real work on your part, you'll be trained to be strong enough and smart enough to not have to fight. If you are searching for a quick black belt for your ego, MMA or rolling around on a mat, this is NOT for you. If you want to learn who, what, where, how and why of when training was a matter of life or death, then proceed further. You WILL get back what you put in to this. As I have learned in the dojo: Everybody works. Nothing in life is free. All start at the bottom

Charles is an amazing trainer, he knows the intricacies of the musculoskeletal system and how it coordinates with different exercises with different weights. He’s not a trainer that will leave you to your own devices and give you an exercise to do and that’s it. Charles takes the time and the focus to place it on your through every rep and movement, he guides you on the focusing of the particular muscle being worked to achieve the highest quality of work done.
