Christina M. says, "I admit, when I thought about practicing piano in this virtual world we now work in, I was nervous to learn the basics without a guide to accompany me. But with Daniel, it was truly seamless and simple. Since working with Daniel for the first half of 2021, I have managed to learn the basics of piano, and am genuinely enjoying the work. Because Daniel is a music professor and performer by trade, he is the best at starting from scratch and cooking up a custom lesson plan to match your goals. First I was intimidated by his CV, but he was nothing but polite and humble. He finds organic ways to relate the lesson to real-life events, which appeals to learners at all levels. He has a down to earth, honest, open, agile and outgoing personality, which makes working with him fun and exciting. I always walk away from the lesson feeling like I learned the right way to do something, and excited for next week! Daniel grounds all of his lessons in practical music theory, and the difference is obvious when working with a piano teacher. Especially when the lessons are virtual, it was essential to be taught the proper methods and truly grasp them before moving onto the next task. Dr. Beliavsky’s motto that always rings true in his lessons is “It’s all about progress, not perfection.” Daniel had no problem answering my silly questions on method and theory. In the end, it made our lessons more comfortable and carefree, while remaining disciplined and focused. He is a very talented man that makes learning piano - in person or virtually - fun at any age. I’ve recommended him to a few of my girlfriends for children’s piano lessons and they’ve had success with Daniel as well! He was a great find! " Read more

Kerry S. says, " My young son and I had the good fortune to become piano students of virtuoso concert pianist Judy Kameny. Kind, patient and versatile, she is clearly skilled at teaching all ages. Using the traditional classical teaching method, Judy not only taught us how to play the piano but instilled in us a true understanding of theory, the “bones”, so to speak, of the pieces we were playing. For an unforgettable, rewarding learning experience I highly recommend Judy. She gave my son and me the gift of music and a love of playing the piano." Read more

Sandy D. says, "When I found Erica on LinkedIn, I just connected to her because I liked what she did with her business. I saw business acumen and a love of pianos. On LinkedIn I like to collect people who reflect my values and Erica certainly does that. I’ve had piano lessons before. Started and stopped maybe 4, 5 or 6 times before with different teachers. They were nice, but most of them didn’t click with me. I finally tried working with a music therapist a few years ago because of cognitive difficulties due to Multiple Sclerosis. We definitely clicked but wouldn’t you know insurance doesn’t cover music therapy? After paying a fair but unsustainable amount of cash over a few months, I had to terminate. There went my dream of learning to play piano. Years go by and along comes Erica. I didn’t tell her about my MS. In my first lesson, I actually cried. For the first time in years, I was sitting at the piano and then re-learning the piano in a new way. Here I found someone finally, who gets me. Her method of teaching was unusually simple. And she was very patient with me. I made music. When I told her about my MS she started crying because she told me that her method was meant to work with the disabled! Why shouldn’t disabled people have the joy of playing piano like other people? MS is an invisible illness that breaks down the nervous system. It can’t be seen unless one is in a wheel chair. Neurological disorders can’t be seen. But when I tell you something insight me lit up…I can’t explain it. Was it my brain making new neuronal connections or was it my spirit on fire…? I don’t know. Did it create healing and reignite my hope of making music? Yes it did. If you have an opportunity to take piano lessons from Erica do it. If you can learn her methods and pass them on to others, learn them. You may create a drastic impact on someone. Erica’s warmth and method of teaching had that impact on me. " Read more

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

I graduated from the City College of New York in 2013 with the highest honors for Classical Piano, and am a professional musician: out of all of my teachers, Dr. Beliavsky (whom I studied theory with) is still, to this day, one of the most unforgettable ones who have left an indelible mark on me. His level of expertise in theory, analysis, piano and composition among others is awe inspiring and thought provoking in a truly mind-altering way. He has an uncanny ability to take very complex ideas and making them clear. I am honored to say that I still consult with him to this day about multiple issues, and his level of genuine care, alongside with his phenomenal expertise, makes him, for me, a one of a kind teacher.

"I have been playing the piano from an early age, but it has been many years since I took formal lessons. I have always wished to become an advanced pianist, but realized I needed professional instruction to guide me on my journey. I then found Erica. I am delighted to say that, in a few short months, my expectations have not only been met but far exceeded. I am now competently playing a Chopin Etude which has long been a particular go of mine. My progress is in large part due to Erica's talent and dedication as a pianist and teacher. And, although she holds me to the highest possible standards, bour lessons are ALWAYS chock full of laughter and camaraderie. Any serious piano student would be lucky to have Erica as an instructor, as am I.

He's a great teacher: encouraging, but also knows when and how to critique and not discourage a beginner. Makes sure it is challenging, but not overwhelming. Encyclopedic knowledge of jazz and music theory. Definitely recommend!

I started taking piano lessons this past year as a gift from my musically talented mother, and found Cristina through research online. For the months that I took lessons with her she was incredibly talented, patient, kind and understanding when I wasn't getting certain notes. I couldn't recommend her enough whether you are beginning or advanced. Sadly I am moving away from NY so won't be able to continue lessons with her, but if you are looking for lessons.

Will has all the attributes of a great teacher. He is knowledgeable, patient and passionate about music. I look forward to the lessons. I always feel like I’m getting better. I take guitar lessons, but Will plays about 6 instruments in total and I think his musical acumen brings and added intangible to the lessons.

Joe is a full blown musician , piano player guitar player singer composer . After many years not of playing guitar as i once did in my youth and wanting to pick it back up again as a senior , and this time actually learning to read and understand music and how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together and why , you’ll not find a better teacher to guide you than Joe. I highly recommend Joe and thankful for finding him via this site.

Jason really understood my situation—a kind of writer's block about the rhythm of my lyrics. He zeroed in on the how and why of it and gave me very clear help that "unfroze" my writing. And production-wise, he's amazing.
