Originally from Mexico, Concert pianist and Music pedagogue Zaira Castillo-Malibrán began her music studies at the age of eight.
She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from the Conservatorio de las Rosas in Morelia, the oldest and one of the most prestigious Conservatories in Latin America, and continued her studies at the Universidad de Guanajuato both in Mexico.
She has performed at important forums and festivals around Mexico and the US with a repertoire that includes music from all periods, from the Baroque to the XXI Century, including pieces written specially for her. Also, Ms. Castillo has done research and performances on the Mexican Piano Music of the XIX Century and Mexican Nationalism under the sponsorship of the National Endowment for the Arts of Mexico.
With a strong focus on children and teenagers, she has a teaching experience of more than 12 years in his native Mexico and also in Boston, where she lived for 6 years before coming to Albuquerque in 2011.
She is a former group piano instructor a the University of New Mexico Prep School.
We also offer individual music theory, composition, orchestration, counterpoint and advanced music analysis lessons. They are taught by Dr. José Luis Hurtado (Zaira's husband). Dr. Hurtado is a renown composer and pianist who holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and is currently a full-time Professor at the University of New Mexico Department of Music.
