Ivanka Dill Violin Lessons
About
Hello, I got enchanted by the violin when I was 6 years old. The Violin (and the music) is not only my career, it is my passion too!I love performing as well as helping others discover the huge expressive potential of the violin.
My formal classical training, as well as a degree with Major in Music Education, is from Europe. I have many years of experience as a professional orchestra musician, both in Europe and in the USA and maintain a small private studio teaching students of various ages and levels - beginner through advanced. Any personality, any artist, any student is unique. Everyone has a unique way of perception and study. Therefore I consider the teaching process also a learning one. Please, share your personal goals (or violin related problems) with me and I will help you achieve them.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I welcome potential new students to a free consultation. We play music together or discuss student's personal goals, interests, and preferences and we come together with a plan, or strategy if necessary. I also need to meet the student and assess her /his level, problem areas that need help, and strong qualities that need encouragement. Then I determine what methods and techniques would be our best next step in the student's growth and development as a violinist.
Beginners and young kids very often need help with sizing or finding a good instrument. I am always happy to help them with any instrument related issues, as those could be crucial for the student's progress. If you are a beginner and have not purchased your own violin, please do not purchase it in advance - I can help you save money and avoid some mistakes beginners make.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a graduate of the Special High School of Music in Rousse BG - Specialty Violin Performance,
and a graduate of the Academy for Music, Dance, and Fine Arts in Plovdiv BG - US Equivalent of a Bachelor of Music with a Major in Music Education.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Yes. I charge $ 50 / hour, or $37.50 /45 minutes for lessons in my studio when paid in advance for any calendar month of lessons. If I travel to your place, additional travel fee applies.
How did you get started teaching?
An important part of my Education was the methodology of teaching the violin. As a student at the Academy, I had to complete a semester of training and experience at the public schools, as well. This is the time when I decided that teaching private violin lessons in the schools of arts would be my favorite form of teaching. After moving to the USA teaching private violin lessons became a necessary financial supplement to my performing career.
What types of students have you worked with?
Various. Ages 4 through adult.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
One of my first students is now a colleague of mine in the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, many of my recent students play in all three of the Reno Phil's Youth Orchestras. All of my students share the love of making music!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Group lessons and playing in an ensemble are lots of fun, but they alone can not give you the needed fundamental elements like correct posture and technique. Good intonation and rhythm are the first necessary qualities anyone should have developed prior to learning to play in an ensemble.Yet, we never stop learning and improving our individual technique in purpose to have more fun while making music together. Good players do not necessarily make good teachers and not all good teachers are necessarily performing solo artists. In any case, consider the help of a professional private teacher. Please be honest, positive and open to collaboration.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Do you want to play the violin? Why? What is your favorite piece of music? Do you have any previous experience making music? (singing, playing any other instruments, playing the violin)? How many years of experience? Do you need help with your instrument? Have you set some personal goals already? What was the last musical piece you were working on?
