DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY OFFICE DIRECTORATE OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS 639 HOWARD ROAD WEST POINT, NY 10996
ODIA-USMA 4 December 2019
MEMORANDUM FOR RECORD
SUBJECT: Letter of Recommendation Mr. Jason Goldman.
1. I highly recommend Mr. Jason Goldman for the U.S. National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Jason has made a tremendous impact on the wrestling community throughout his service as a coach, athlete, and mentor. Jason boasts numerous U.S. National Championship titles, a 2013 World Gold medal, and several other world level medals but perhaps his most significant impact is in the realm of coaching and mentoring young athletes.
2. I began my wrestling career nearly 20 years ago under the tutelage of Coach Goldman. He spent countless hours with me in high school to improve my technique and tactics on the mat which helped me become a serious competitor. However, as much as he helped me on the mat, it pales in comparison to the impact he has had on my life. Jason’s deliberate approach to mental skills training, particularly goal setting for wrestling, directly contributed to my success at the United States Military Academy and my career as an Officer in the United States Army. I continue to integrate his goal setting and coaching techniques into my preparation for the 2020 Greco Roman Olympic Trials. I am honored to recommend Jason for this welldeserved honor, and I am confident that his contributions to the wrestling community will continue to inspire countless men and women for years to come.
3. If there is any way I can further advocate for Mr. Jason Goldman please do not hesitate to contact me at 916-622-7124 or [email protected].

I would like to write a letter in support of Jason Goldman’s nomination to be recognized as a ‘Graduate of Distinction’ for Maine Endwell High School. When evaluating the requirements necessary to receive this honor, it becomes clear that Jason deserves to be recognized in this manner. Not only has Jason fulfilled one of the requirements to receive this distinction, he has fulfilled all three.
When reviewing Jason’s resume, it is clear that he was an exceptional athlete who acquired more than his fair share of tournament titles and victories. A multiple time New York State Champion and an All-American at both the high school and collegiate level. These accolades are truly special. However, more important than his personal successes on the mat has been Jason’s ability to motivate and mentor young athletes as a wrestling coach.
Throughout my junior high and high school years, I had the opportunity to work with Jason as he served as both a coach and a workout partner. Without his technical expertise, and more importantly, his consistently positive attitude and ability to mentor, both on and off the mat, I cannot say that I would be where I am in my life (NCAA Champion, 3x NCAA All-American, Harvard graduate, and current Head Assistant for Harvard University Wrestling). Furthermore, I know that I am just one of many student-athletes that he has made a significant impact on. The student-athletes on this list are truly impressive, as he has mentored such successes as Troy Nickerson (NCAA Champion and Cornell Graduate), Kyle Dake (4x Div I NCAA Champion and Cornell Graduate), Donnie Vinson (NCAA All-American and Binghamton University graduate), to name a few.
If you have any questions regarding Jason, please feel free to contact me at any time. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
J.P. O’Connor

To whom it may concern,
I would like to recommend Jason Goldman as a Maine-Endwell High School “Graduate of Distinction.” I first met Jason when I was just a boy and he was a counselor at a youth wrestling camp that I was attending. My father had followed his athletic career, and we spent many nights watching Jason’s technical skills on the wrestling mat. What impressed me the most that day when I met Jason was the way he carried himself and his personal demeanor. Years later, I was fortunate enough to have Jason coach me on a full time basis at Chenango Forks High School where Jason was an assistant coach and my personal coach and training partner. Because of Jason’s love for the sport and willingness to help each of his athletes reach their goals, I was able to develop my talent and love for wrestling to an entirely new level. Now, over a decade later, I have become the most successful wrestler in New York State History, a Division 1 NCAA National Champion, and an assistant wrestling coach at Iowa State University. Without Jason’s dedication to making me the best I could be, I do not know that I would be who I am today. Please note that I am only one of the success stories that Jason is accountable for.
Nonetheless, the most important thing about Jason that sets him apart from the rest is his ability to develop personal relationships. Years after we were in our Coach-Athlete relationship, we have developed a great friendship that will never end. Jason and I still talk today and every time we do, I still sense his personal caring attitude when he asks, “How are you doing?”
As a Division 3 National Wrestling Champion, Binghamton University Hall of Fame member, and New York State Assistant Coach of the Year award winner; please consider Jason for another great honor. If you have any questions regarding Jason, please feel free to contact me at any time. I would be happy to speak on his behalf.
Sincerely,
Troy Nickerson

Frequently asked questions

Each student is at their own distinct level so my instruction is based on that. I usually have them fill out a goal statement when we start so that it gives me an idea of exactly where I need to direct their passion. Once we start working out I can then verify their exact experience and we advance form there.
