Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Each new beginner student explains their musical goal to me first. Such as performing for an audience, performing for NYSSMA, learn music theory, compose, play popular songs, etc.
From there we are on the same page and can focus on what is important.
For all students I write the tasks needs to achieve their goals. Scale, exercise such as Dozen a day , or Czerny, depending on the musical level of student. Written work for learning notation chords and rhythm. Finally the song or songs to be practiced. This makes it clear every week what is expected for the next lesson.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Master in Music education from Hofstra University. I have taught piano classes for Town of Huntington since 2005. I have been a NYSSMA adjudicator for four years. I created an iPad piano learning app for new students called Mini Maestros Piano learning.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Yes pricing for all private lessons can be found on my website Pianoinc.com
classes held in Melville studio are $35 per hour class and tuition is paid the beginning of every month. I do not hold classes on holidays nor charge parents for holidays.
How did you get started teaching?
I've played piano since I was 5 years old however I didn't realize my love and passion for music and teaching till well into my late 30s after a career in financial sales in the city.
Now I am a mother, business owner and music teacher and live every minute.
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with children, adults and special needs students.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently took my students to perform holiday songs at a nursing home. Being able to share music with the elderly and performing with my own child is a great experience.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
interview them. Every teacher has a different personality and technique . Do not be afraid to ask questions.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How long have you taught? Where did you receive your training ? Why do you teach? Who is your best student and why?
What do you do to encourage students who do not practice?
