I'm Pedro Barrera, an operatic tenor and the founder of The True Voice Studio. For the first eight years of my training, I was treated as a baritone, so I spent years building technique around a voice type that wasn't actually mine. Rebuilding from baritone to tenor, starting over almost from scratch, taught me more about how voices work than any single method could have. My operatic career has taken me to stages in South America, New York City, and Europe. Operatic singing has been the pillar of my career, but along the way, I have also trained with Katie Riggs in Speech Level Singing. This method builds the voice with the essentials needed

I am a senior at NYU majoring in Musical Theatre. I have been taking private voice lessons since I was 8 years old, and I credit all of my success vocally to starting voice lessons at that young age. I think that starting voice lessons early is essential to building the foundation for more advanced voice work as a teenager/young adult. Taking voice lessons from childhood puts your child years ahead of their peers. I would not consider myself qualified to teach voice at the collegiate level, but I absolutely believe that with my decade of lessons, 2 years at a specialized Classical Voice High School program, and 1 year of college in Musical Th

Your Singing Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much are singing lessons?

Singing lessons cost $50 to $90 per hour on average. Prices vary depending on the teacher's location, experience, reputation, and whether you're taking a private or group lesson. Group lessons typically cost less per person than private lessons, but you may not get as much personal attention and feedback in a group setting.

  • Some singing teachers charge a flat rate for a specified increment of time, typically in 30-minute, 45-minute, or 60-minute increments.
  • Many coaches offer package deals to purchase 2 to 10+ lessons at a time and reduce the cost per lesson.

Do singing lessons work?

Singing lessons won't change your sound completely, but they can help improve your sound by strengthening your vocal cords and improving your range and tone.

What do singing lessons teach you?

Singing lessons involve more than just your voice. A vocal coach will teach you how to hold and improve your posture, which gives your diaphragm optimal room to expand. You also learn proper breathing techniques and how to use your breath to improve your tone. Singing lessons also help you improve your diction—the way you articulate your words when singing—as well as your ability to match specific pitches.

Can adults take singing lessons?

Yes, adults can absolutely take singing lessons. While starting singing lessons at a young age gives you more time to develop your voice, it's never too late to begin learning and improve your singing voice.

How do I find the best singing lessons near me?

Follow these guidelines to help you choose the best singing lessons near you:

  • Check out their reviews on Lessons.com and Google.
  • Get at least three estimates from teachers with similar credentials.
  • Ask for recommendations from others in the local music community.
  • Do a trial meeting or lesson if possible with several teachers to find the best fit for your goals.
  • Ask them about their training and credentials.
  • Ask about what specific methods and techniques they teach.
  • Ask about the specific progress they've made with other students.
  • Make sure their schedule matches your availability.

What questions should I ask when choosing a singing teacher?

Ask these questions to help you choose the best singing teacher for you:

  • How long have you been teaching singing?
  • Can you share any success stories?
  • Do I need to have a good voice already to become a better singer?
  • How long does it typically take to see improvement?
  • Do you offer any package deals?
  • What is your teaching schedule?
  • How long are your singing lessons?
  • How often should I practice?
  • Do you offer private or group lessons?
  • Where do you teach?
  • Do you offer online lessons using video calling?

Montclair Voice Studio Distance distinguishes itself from other studios in providing a most optimal and holistic learning environment. Each student is fully assessed and given the tools to identify and correct “weaknesses”, build upon strengths and cultivate ones’ scholarship all while encouraging one to connect with the best opportunities for one’s own artistic/recreational/professional development. I truly cannot say enough about what a wonderful and RARE gem and model is found here. They see you at your best potential here and you leave the studio reaching that potential! Isn’t that the point of learning?!!!

Working with Gayle has been a wonderful experience over the last 6 months! I can't believe how far I've come just from practicing her unique techniques and methods. Every time we have a lesson, I feel that we always make great progress, and even with the challenges I face, I put what she teaches me into mind to try and be the best I can be. I can't wait to see how far I will go in the future, because I know Gayle won't let me down!

He's a great teacher: encouraging, but also knows when and how to critique and not discourage a beginner. Makes sure it is challenging, but not overwhelming. Encyclopedic knowledge of jazz and music theory. Definitely recommend!

While working as a professional Broadway performer I had the honor to train with Julia. The sessions were very challenging at first because I needed to retrain my breath, relax facial muscles and work on everything from creating sound. Julia's detail to technique allowed me to blossom and find my authentic voice. Her approach to singing is fun but spiritual at the same time. In all my years of vocal training, Julia was by far the most inspiring and liberating teacher I had. Take a risk -you just might find your voice.
