About

Music is a beautiful language. Not only is it emotionally satisfying, the benefits of learning music carry over into all other aspects of life.

Either as a hobby, as an amateur performer, or a professional musician, I would be happy to guide and help you on your musical journey. Having taught all ages (children to adult) at all levels (beginner to college-level students), I hope to share my experiences both as a teacher and as a professional pianist with you.

In addition to classical piano lessons, I believe a well-rounded musicianship hones the ears and artistic development. Feel free to ask about theory, accompanying, chamber music, or even video editing of musical performances!

I love music and I love teaching. My main goal as a teacher is to inspire students and to stimulate their interest/enthusiasm for piano. This journey of discovery, work, and achievement is a fulfilling process for both the student and for me.

The 3-4 years I spent learning with Alison really strengthened my skills to play accurately and expressively. I am not familiar with music theory, but Alison is good at using metaphors to give me images of these musical pieces. Also, she is willing to spend extra time with me before piano juries, and brings us good donuts and coffee after mock juries. I cannot thank her more for the wonderful semesters.

I have known Alison for three years. She is an excellent, responsible, and friendly instructor who goes above and beyond to ensure her students fully master each repertoire and to always challenge us to be better. Alison is able to explain difficult techniques in a much simpler way, and she makes each lesson enjoyable and interesting. In addition, Alison makes sure we are well-prepared for our final recitals by having mock recitals several weeks before and gives constructive feedback on how we can improve the pieces. Her enthusiasm and dedication in teaching show that she cares for her students, and she never hesitates to provide additional help.

Alison is a kind, patient teacher and friend to students. It is a pleasure having a chance to work with her. She has a very deep understanding of piano performance and having her class not only improves my skills, but also comprehension of music itself.

Alison has been my teacher for three years, and she has provided me with many encouragement and useful suggestions on piano performance. Besides being a teacher, she is also an excellent pianist. I have been to her recitals several times and she always inspires me with her gorgeous performance.

MY

My daughter, Evelyn, has taken individual piano lessons with Alison for about two semesters. When we were looking for a new piano teacher, both my daughter and I were deeply impressed by Alison’s professionalism, enthusiasm, and her love for music. I’ve been truly amazed by how she organized the lessons and attended to the details that my daughter might have missed in her practice. My daughter has not only significantly improved her piano skills but also became even more motivated to practice new pieces!

Frequently asked questions

I offer a free meet-and-greet session for both the student and me to become acquinted. Beginner students will use a piano method book, while students who already know note-reading will continue through the classical curriculum.

However, my approach is catered to the individual student so the standard curriculum is just a guideline.

Piano learning can be fun and inspiring. The most important thing is your own personal ambition, as that will dictate your passion and interest. My goal is to help you become a self-directed learner, with the technical facility and sensitive ears to play the pieces you are fond of.

Nothing is too silly or small to ask. If you have a concern, just ask!
